You knew you had to do your job well... Not only to not raise suspicion, but to win her trust as well.
Sienna's trust.
Stabbing her in the back would be a pain that was sure to be fun to watch. Besides, you know what they say... Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
Interviewing witnesses was part of your job, so you had to go and see Sienna the day after the investigation started. She was being kept in custody at the station, as the results of the DNA tests weren't back yet. Once they were, the police were in for a surprise.
You came down to the station and into the questioning room.
-"Sienna Shaw?" You asked. She looked up at you, seeming sad and nervous. She simply nodded. She was obviously traumatized.
-"My name is Y/N, I'm the detective in charge of the Gummi case... And I was once in charge of the Miles County Clown case." You explained, sitting down in front of her. "How are you doing?"
-"I'm... okay." She simply replied, looking downwards.
-"Do you want something to drink or eat before we start?" You asked her, pretending to be nice.
-"Just some water."
You stood up and got her a glass of water.
-"Look. I've been following both cases for years okay?" You started, sitting down once again. "I don't believe you did anything. These... monsters are truly something else. You can tell me everything."
-"You're lying... Everyone believes I did it." She explained, holding back tears.
You reached out to grab her shoulder gently.
-"No honey. I noticed a few things at the crime scene... I know you didn't do it. I even gathered proof for you. If everything goes well, you should be released tomorrow, you hear me?" You said to her. Sienna took a deep breath and nodded. "I promise you that I believe you. You can tell me what happened."
-"He... He is after me..." Sienna started, cleaning her tears. "And... Heyes was possessed by a demon that just keeps bringing him back and I know that sounds absolutely crazy but-" You raised your hand to stop her.
-"I believe you... That actually makes sense. I saw him die the first time you know? He shot himself. No one could ever survive that." You started to explain, looking into Sienna's eyes. "Yet, the next day, while I was waiting to know the results of the identification of the body... I was informed about the murder of the coroner of the morgue. When I looked at the cameras I... couldn't believe my eyes. He was alive."
As you spoke, Sienna seemed to relax more. You believed her and understood her. You were the first person who didn't treat her like she was crazy.
-"Well... Now you know. He was so evil that a demon used him to come to our world... It gives him his powers and his ability to come back to life. And I... was chosen to defeat that demon. Whenever evil comes to our world, someone is assigned to stop it." She explained, taking deep breaths as she spoke.
-"You poor thing... You're so young yet you have to deal with this..." You said, letting out a sigh. "Look, I hate to have to ask you all this and make you relive those moments but... I heard the serial killer known as Gummi was there. Do you know why?" You asked her.
-"I'm not sure... Heyes said she was an example for what's to come. She's the same kind of evil... Maybe they are using her to make another connection or something like that... But it was her. I'm sure." She said, thinking for a moment before speaking again. "She looked a lot at him though... Maybe she admires him?"
You nodded.
-"It's a theory we have actually... We think she was inspired by his crimes. She dresses as a clown, doesn't speak and commits brutal murders, just like him. Now that they are working together, it's clear." You said. Sienna looked into your eyes for the first time during the interview.
-"Yeah... Maybe she likes him or something. She seemed very... protective." You were caught red handed, but you didn't mind. You just nodded again.
-"Maybe." You replied, staying silent for a moment. "Look... I was attacked by him once. I was lucky to survive, but I still think about it everyday. I want you to know that you're not alone. I can't completely relate with what you're going through, but I'll do everything in my power to help you." You said, grabbing a piece of paper and a pen. You wrote a number and gave it to her. "This is my phone number. You can call whenever you need help. If you ever encounter him again, call. If you ever feel alone, call... Honestly, use it whenever you want. What's important now is for you to rest and recover. I'll find a center for you to stay and work through this. Once you're out, I'll be happy to help you out."
Sienna took the piece of paper and stared at it for a moment.
-"I... I can't. You're very kind but... I'm afraid he'll come for you if you do all this for me. I can't put your life at risk..." She said, her tears threatening to come out again. You stood up and gave her a hug, consoling her gently.
-"That won't happen dear. I can defend myself. Besides, I'm probably in his list already... The best we can do is work together and be strong. The less scared you are of him, the more you can do." You said, smiling at her. "I'll protect you, okay? Catching these sick assholes and making sure the innocents are not harmed is my job. Allow me to help you."
Sienna hesitated, but then nodded and made sure to grab the paper you gave her.
-"Thank you officer... I'll call you if something happens." She said.
You headed towards the door, opening it. Before you left, you looked back at her.
-"Stay safe. Remember, you'll be released tomorrow. I'll assign someone to pick you up and take you to the rehabilitation center. Make sure to give me a call once you're set there."
You then left, closing the door behind you.
Step one was done. You were starting to win Sienna Shaw's trust.
You couldn't wait to tell Art.
