Chapter 38: Carol Underground

Angel Island - Mushroom Hill, Morning Hours
Back in Mushroom Hill a low hum filled the air as a shadow moved over the towering mushrooms of the forest. Descending slowly through the canopy was Metal Lilac, her metallic form catching the soft morning light filtering through the mushroom caps. Her engine thrummed steadily as she neared the ground, landing on the forest floor.
For a moment, she stood still, her sensors scanning the area, taking in every detail of her surroundings. According to her database, this was Mushroom Hill. But as her eyes moved across the landscape, her sensors feeding back detailed images and sensory data, Metal Lilac found herself... fascinated. The towering mushroom trees stretched high above her.
With curiosity that seemed almost uncharacteristic of her, Metal Lilac crouched down, reaching out to pluck a small mushroom from the ground. She held it between her fingers, rotating it to examine the delicate textures and colors. Beautiful... Her processors echoed the word as she took in its details. This place-it was far more captivating than the flat images stored in her memory banks. She was only in one section of this vast island, yet already the experience of it was unlike anything she had ever sensed.
For a long moment, Metal Lilac stayed that way, absorbing the details of her surroundings. Her processors registered feelings of intrigue, a yearning to explore more of this beautiful, mysterious place.
But her core directives soon flared in her mind, breaking through the calm that had settled over her. She straightened abruptly, her circuits registering a slight flicker of frustration. This distraction... these thoughts... She could feel them tugging at her programming. Such feelings were new, unexpected-and they were hindering her.
Metal Lilac's engine revved as she dismissed the distraction, focusing on the mission with renewed clarity. She had lost precious time. If her database was correct, she would find the Master Emerald and its guardian not far from here, somewhere deep in the sanctuary at the island's heart. Her eyes lingered on the mushroom-covered landscape around her, a faint pull of regret registering in her processors as she realized she would have to leave it behind. But maybe... maybe someday, if her creator's vision was fulfilled, she would have the chance to explore this place freely.
Turning away from the view, she powered up with a faint hum, her engine flaring to life. With a final look back, she launched herself into the skies, leaving the surreal beauty of Mushroom Hill behind as she ascended, her mind now focused entirely on her mission: finding the Master Emerald and fulfilling her creator's command.

Angel Island - Underground Tunnels
Beneath the sands of Sandopolis lay an ancient maze of tunnels, a sprawling labyrinth that stretched for miles beneath the surface. The underground passageways were cold and silent, with an air thick with the scent of ancient stone and dust from centuries of solitude, fragments of the forgotten history carved into the walls.
Suddenly, a hole burst open in one of these tunnels, and with a startled scream, a green wildcat fell through, tumbling down before hitting the rocky floor with a heavy thud.
"Aahhh... Uf!"
Carol hit the ground face-first, her breath knocked out of her. With a groan, she pushed herself up, coughing as she spat out a mouthful of gritty sand. "Ugh... Coff, coff!" She blinked rapidly, trying to clear the dust from her eyes, wiping at them as they watered.
