The first rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room. I blinked my eyes open, my mind still sluggish from the late-night slumber party.

The quiet hum of the morning outside the window was at odds with the quiet chaos of my thoughts. My eyes darted over to the girls, still sound asleep in their sleeping bags or sprawled out across the bed, all of them looking peaceful after a long night of laughter and secrets.

Reina was snoring softly, Sam curled up with her pillow, and Lola had a few stray strands of blonde hair falling over her face, making her look younger than she actually was while Nikki was curled into a ball.

For a moment, I just sat there, watching them, my mind whirling with everything I had told them last night.

It was too early for anyone to wake up and I knew I needed to go and find answers before the day got away from me.

The mystery of the address we'd found in my uncle's study gnawed at me, a constant itch I couldn't ignore, and I knew Jamie would be waiting for me like we'd agreed yesterday.

I quietly slipped out of bed, careful not to wake anyone. The room felt cool and still, with only the faintest sounds of birds or the occasional chatter of the workers of the house creeping in through the window.

I didn't want to leave without letting the girls know, but I also didn't want to risk them coming along. The fewer people involved in this, the better, because Jamie and I had our work cut out for us today.

I grabbed my phone, double-checked the address we'd photographed, and silently slipped into the bathroom to change.

The clothes I picked out were simple so that it would be easy to move in if things went sideways.

I wasn't sure what we were going to find, but I knew it wasn't going to be anything pleasant

I wasn't sure what we were going to find, but I knew it wasn't going to be anything pleasant. If this was connected to our family's past, there was bound to be something more.
