Aashvi blinked, adjusting to the gentle morning light filtering through the hospital room curtains. The soft warmth that cradled her was a strange contrast to the exhausting night she'd just survived. Her body ached, but her heart felt full, every breath she took marked by a quiet peace she hadn't experienced in months. She shifted, feeling the hospital sheets against her skin, and her gaze fell to the small bassinet beside her bed. Her baby boy lay there, just a day old and already precious beyond words.
But as her eyes adjusted, she noticed something else—a familiar figure leaning over the bassinet, so intent on its tiny occupant that he didn't even realize she was awake.
Vraj stood, his back hunched slightly, a look of absolute wonder on his face. His hair was still tousled from the night before, and he had dark circles under his eyes. But as he gazed at their baby boy, his face held an expression so soft, so open, it took Aashvi's breath away. She held herself perfectly still, not wanting to break the spell of the moment, watching as Vraj gently extended his hand toward the baby, his fingers barely brushing the tiny fist that peeked out of the swaddling blanket.
"Good morning, little one,"
he whispered, his voice low and full of warmth.
"Did you know that today's a big day? You'll finally get to meet everyone... your Nana and Nani, and your Chachu, bua, mama and mami and... your Dadi. They're all so excited to see you."
Aashvi's heart fluttered as she listened to him, marveling at this new side of him. He was so calm, so earnest, a man she had come to trust despite everything. She had never imagined she would see him like this, holding his son's tiny hand, his eyes brimming with emotions he could barely contain.
Vraj chuckled softly, his voice little more than a breath.
"Do you know how strong your mom is?"
he murmured, stroking the baby's cheek with a tenderness that brought a lump to Aashvi's throat.
"She's... incredible. You should have seen her yesterday, the way she pushed through every bit of pain just to bring you into this world."
His voice caught, and he cleared his throat, shaking his head as though the memory overwhelmed him.
"I've never seen anything like it."
The baby cooed softly, tiny eyelids fluttering open as he gazed up at Vraj, and Vraj's eyes lit up in response. He leaned closer, his tone shifting to a playful, conspiratorial whisper.
"Oh, and did you know you have your mom's nose?"
He let out a quiet laugh, glancing toward Aashvi's bed as if to make sure she wasn't watching. "You may look tiny, but I know you'll be just as strong as her, little one..."
