Chapter 86: The First New Year
In the Song household, breakfast consisted of thick, hearty porridge.
Although Song Yi Mo had strictly forbidden her grandmother from eating pickled vegetables, Grandma Song knew that her granddaughter and Mu Yang both enjoyed them, so this year she had prepared a generous amount.
Zhai Mu Yang ladled only half a bowl of porridge for Yi Mo, garnishing it with a few slices of appetizing pickled radish peel and cucumber. "I know you're not feeling well, so just eat a little to line your stomach; you can't take your medicine on an empty stomach."
Miao Zhi Ruo hurried over to help her sit up against the headboard.
Yi Mo truly had no desire to eat, but she had never been good at refusing the kindness of others. So, she accepted the bowl and took a spoonful.
Seeing her eat slowly but steadily, Zhai Mu Yang felt relieved and quickly finished his own bowl.
"Mo Mo!" Miao Zhi Ruo suddenly exclaimed as she was pushed away.
"Ugh!" Yi Mo bent over the edge of the bed, expelling the few bites of porridge she had just consumed.
Zhai Mu Yang tossed the bowl aside and sat at the edge of the bed, gently rubbing Yi Mo's back as he looked up and said, "Aunt He, I need to trouble you..."
"I know, I know. I'm coming! Zhi Ruo, don't stand in the way; go and get Yi Mo some water with a bit of salt—just a little, don’t overdo it."
The mother and daughter rushed out, gently pushing aside a few people who had come to see what was happening. "You all stay out for now; the room is small and there's no space to move around. Miao Jun, keep an eye on Aunt Song."
"I don't need looking after. He Yi, you go ahead; I won’t get in the way." Aunt Song clasped her hands tightly, her veins standing out as she leaned on Miao Jun and made her way toward the sofa.
Miao Jun watched the elderly woman sway as she walked, his heart heavy with concern.
The two had supported each other through the years; any misfortune that befell one was felt deeply by the other.
How could Song Yi endure this!
Song Yi Mo had hardly eaten anything the day before, so the amount she vomited was not much, but now she was retching only clear water.
He Yi came in with water, wiping Yi Mo's soiled hands and the bed's edge. Seeing her discomfort brought tears to her eyes. "What should we do? Maybe we should take her to the hospital."
Zhai Mu Yang thought the same. "We need to get her checked out to be sure."
"No need to go." Yi Mo rested her head on her arm, suppressing the urge to vomit as she spoke softly. "These are symptoms that can occur after a bone marrow extraction. It’s just that being sick magnifies the reaction. Going to the hospital wouldn’t help; there’s no miracle cure that can fix me in an instant."
"But you..."
"Throwing up actually feels better." Yi Mo furrowed her brow, clearly in distress. "I'm not holding on; I genuinely feel a bit relieved after being vomited."
He Yi wanted to persuade her further, but Zhai Mu Yang gently shook his head and twisted a towel from the bedside to help wipe Yi Mo's mouth and face. "We'll do as you say and not go, but if you start feeling worse, you have to tell us."
"Okay." Song Yi Mo's eyes were half-open as she offered a faint smile.
Miao Zhi Ruo came over with a cup, about to feed Yi Mo a sip, when someone snatched it away.
