The winter wind howled softly, carrying the faint scent of frost and pine as Kevin descended onto the snow-dusted cemetery. His hood was pulled low over his face, but his eyes, weary yet focused, locked onto the lone grave ahead. The name carved into the granite was simple yet powerful: Sapphire Lopez.
He knelt in front of the stone, brushing off the fresh snow gathering on the letters. "Hey," he whispered, his voice carried away by the biting breeze. His fingers lingered on the stone as he exhaled deeply, his breath misting in the cold air.
Kevin smiled faintly as memories began to flood his mind. Sapphire. She was sunshine in human form. He could almost see her now, twirling in her awkward little dance, the way she'd scrunch up her nose when she was deep in thought, or how her voice would carry just a hint of excitement when she talked about the future they'd never get to have.
"She always did have her way of lighting up a room," Kevin murmured to himself, shaking his head as the smile deepened. His hood shifted slightly as the wind picked up, ruffling his dreads. The gust felt almost... familiar, like a fleeting caress. Kevin closed his eyes, imagining it was her, reminding him she was still there in some way.
A low hum stirred the silence, and Kevin opened his eyes just as a playful voice called down from above. "You ready to patrol, Ichi?"
Kevin looked up to see Ennui descending gracefully, her gray eyes catching the moonlight like twin orbs of liquid silver. She landed beside him with an effortless ease, her white scarf trailing behind her like a ribbon in the wind.
He gave her a wry smile, shaking off the solemnity of the moment. "Yeah. I'm ready."
Ennui tilted her head, studying him with a knowing smirk. "Have the migraines stopped yet?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Kevin thought for a moment, rubbing the back of his neck. "For the most part, I guess," he said. "Still get 'em sometimes. And the nightmares..." He trailed off, staring at the grave again. "I keep waking up in my old timeline. Reliving it."
Ennui stepped closer and tapped his forehead with a finger, her touch sending a brief glow through him. "That should help," she said softly, smiling.
Kevin scrunched up his nose, feigning annoyance. "Stop calling me Ichi. Makes me feel like some swordsman with amnesia or something."
Ennui chuckled, her laughter like soft chimes. "You're not far off. Your astral form is a swordsman. It's... unique. I've never seen anything like it before."
Her words seemed to pierce deeper than they should. Kevin glanced away, the weight of her gaze making him feel exposed. But Ennui wasn't done. She reached out, gently pulling his chin back toward her, her gray eyes locking onto his. Before he could react, she leaned in and kissed him.
Kevin's dreads sparked with static electricity, and his cheeks flushed despite the cold. When she pulled back, a faint smirk played on her lips. "You're someone I've never seen before, Kevin," she said, her voice soft but certain.
Kevin opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He wasn't sure if it was the cold or the moment itself that had stolen his words.
Ennui grinned mischievously, breaking the tension as she floated upward again. "Come on, sparky," she called down. "Let's see if you can keep up!"
Kevin blinked, shaking himself free of the moment before rising to his feet. "Oh, you're asking for it now," he muttered, the faintest smirk tugging at his lips as he shot into the sky after her.
Ahead of them, the dark forests of North Carolina stretched endlessly, shadows writhing with the faint presence of demons lurking within. There was work to be done, and Kevin wasn't about to let the ghosts of his past hold him back.
