Geo hesitated as she raised her fist to knock at the door. The house wasn't big and shiny, but cozy and modest, words Geo wouldn't have ever used to describe her mother.
She stood there fist raised. She felt Maddie's gaze behind her. Geo had stormed into Caitlyn's office and asked for the address of her mother. Caitlyn wanted to go with her for safety measures but the last thing Geo wanted was Caitlyn around her. Maddie volunteered to follow her which calmed down Caitlyn a bit.
Now she stood here, in front of her mother's home in a more modest 'Janna' outfit than the day before. Her hair was adorned with golden accents and she wore white robes which were a bit less flowy. Caitlyn persisted that she looked the part of a goddess, in case people saw her.
Geo took a deep breath trying to shove the feelings of anxiety down. Then she knocked on the door.
There was a moment of silence after she knocked, then footsteps echoed inside. The door opened, revealing a girl, about 16, who shared much in common with Geo: her dark skin, high cheekbones, and full lips. Even though Geo had straight white hair and the girl had black bouncy curls, her resemblance to Geo was uncanny.
Geo froze. She looks like me If I were never cursed. Geo thought.
"Goddess." The girl bowed.
"I—uh." Geo gaped at the girl like a fish. Goddess? She thought. Was this really how people would react to her?
"You..." She stuttered, then stopped. Now was not the time to get into a philosophical debate on the concept of divinity. "Is your mother home?"
The girl looked at her with awe, her eyes wide with veneration. "Yes, she is. Please, come in." Her voice was soft and nervous, but excited at the same time.
She ushered her inside, closing the door behind her. Geo glanced around, taking in the modest house. It was neat and cozy, far different from the grand residence she had been expecting.
"Um, what's your name?" Geo asked the girl as they walked through the house, Maddie not far behind.
"I'm Gianna," the girl replied, her voice filled with reverence. "You may call me Gia, goddess."
They made their way into a kitchen, where Geo's eyes were drawn to a picture of a woman on the wall.
"Geo." She said. "Just call me Geo."
She took another glance at the picture on the wall, unable to tear her eyes away.
"Is that your mother?" She asked, pointing to the woman in the photo.
"Yes, that's my mother," Gia replied, following her gaze. "She's a strong woman. Kind and caring."
Geo held back a laugh. Gia led Geo further into the kitchen, which was small but immaculate. Fresh biscuits were laid out on the table, and a pot of tea was steeping on the stove.
Gia gestured for Geo to sit down at the table while she poured some tea into three cups. Maddie stood in the doorway.
Geo sat down, taking in the warm, homey atmosphere. It was comforting, almost nostalgic, to be in a home like this. But she was not here for comfort or nostalgia, she was here to confront her mother after a decade of absence.
A woman in her late 40's walked into the kitchen. "Gianna dear, have you seen-" She was cut off herself when she noticed Geo and Maddie.
The woman froze, her eyes widening in shock when she saw Geo. For a long, tense moment, she simply stood there, staring at her as if she'd seen a ghost.
Finally, she spoke. "Georgia?" Her voice was hardly more than a whisper.
Gia's mouth dropped open. "You two know each other?"
