The rain soaked all those gathered at the funeral. Caitlyn, eyepatch on the eye Ambessa pierced stood at the pedestal, solemn as she spoke about Geo.
Caitlyn's voice trembled as she spoke, her grief clearly evident in her shaky words.
"We are here today to honor the memory of a young woman who was taken from us too soon," she said. "Geo was a kind, brave, and selfless young woman who cared about everyone she met. She was always willing to help others, even at the cost of her own happiness. I knew her for a short time, but I will miss her deeply."
Caitlyn paused, her eyes filling with tears as she looked down.
"She was the symbol of peace for both Zaun and Piltover. She sacrificed her life to save us all along with all those brave enforcers. In memory of her, we have built a statue in her name." Caitlyn pulled down a rope revealing the statue
Vi's eyes widened as the cloth dropped, revealing the statue. It was a beautiful work of art, depicting Geo standing tall and proud, a staff in her hand, her robes billowing around her. Its marble finish gleamed in the rain, and it was clear that the people of Piltover had clearly held Geo in high regard.
But for Vi, the sight of the statue just stirred up more pain and grief. She had hoped that the sight of the statue would bring her some peace, but it only made the loss seem so much more real.
Caitlyn walked over to Geo's open casket placing a rose in her hand before kissing her forehead.
Vi watched as one by one people came to pay their respects to Geo. Some placed flowers in her hand, while others knelt beside the coffin, quietly whispering their own farewells.
Each person that came forward felt like another knife in Vi's heart, each one reminding her of the fact that Geo was really gone. She felt like she was trapped in a nightmare, unable to wake up from this terrifying reality.
Vi walked up to Geo's body in the diamond casket. Geo had no makeup on and was in simple white clothes. Her hair was curly and black instead of it being usually straight and silver.
Vi stared down at Geo's body, her heart aching at the sight. Her eyes scanned over Geo's face, taking in her features. She looked so peaceful, almost like she was sleeping
She reached out a trembling hand, her fingers gently tracing the outline of Geo's cheek. She had hoped that somehow someway this was a cruel prank. That Geo would wake up and look at her, that cheeky smile on her face.
But she remained still, her skin cold to the touch. Vi pulled her hand back, her mind reeling with grief. She felt like the world had fallen apart around her, like there was nothing left.
"I'm sorry," Vi whispered.
Vi let out a shaky breath, her voice cracking as she spoke.
"I love you."
She felt Caitlyn's hand on her shoulder. She knew she needed to back away so that they could bury her.
As Vi backed up, the top of the coffin closed, Vi tried to memorize every feature of Geo's face.
Vi watched as the coffin was slowly lowered into the ground, and each shovelful of dirt placed on top of it felt like a punch to the gut. It was a final, physical reminder that Geo was truly gone.
A few days later Vi lay in her bed, looking at where Geo would be. Every time she closed her eyes, all she could see was Geo. Her smile. Her laugh. The way her eyes sparkled with joy. It was all still so fresh in her mind, so vivid and real.
There was a knock at the door.
"Come in."
Caitlyn entered the room.
Caitlyn walked into the room slowly, her expression somber. She could see the pain etched on Vi's face and could sense the deep grief and sorrow that had settled over her.
"Hey," she said quietly, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "How are you holding up?"
"I've had better days," Vi said wryly, her voice flat.
She didn't bother to sit up or look at Caitlyn fully. She just kept staring up at the ceiling, her eyes unfocused.
"I keep seeing her, you know," she said, her voice cracking. "I can't get her out of my head. Everywhere I look, I expect to see her. But she's not there."
"First Powder then her. The same day." Vi shook her head.
Caitlyn could feel her heart aching as she listened to Vi's words. She could hear the raw pain and grief in her voice. And she knew that nothing she could say would make it better.
"My sister and girlfriend, gone." Vi laughed bitterly. "Geo always said she was a curse. But I think I'm the Jinx, not Powder."
Caitlyn handed her a box. "I found this in my office. I think it's for you."
Vi sat up, looking curiously at the box in Caitlyn's hands.
"What is it?" she asked, taking it from her.
She held the box in her hands, running her fingers over the smooth surface. She could feel her heart racing a little, wondering what was inside.
Opening the box, Vi let out a small gasp as she saw what was inside. It was a necklace, with a simple charm shaped like a bird in flight. The bird was made of shimmering sapphire and was attached to a delicate silver chain.
"I remember seeing Geo wear that necklace a few times," Caitlyn said.
Vi's fingers traced over the smooth surface of the sapphire bird, her heart thudding in her chest as she took in the sight. The necklace was so delicate, so exquisitely crafted. It was easy to see why Geo had loved it.
Vi put the necklace back in the box.
Caitlyn scooched onto the bed and hugged Vi.
Vi leaned into the hug, feeling the warmth and comfort of Caitlyn's embrace. It was rare for her to allow herself to be held like this, to let herself be vulnerable. But right now, she needed it.
She closed her eyes, letting herself feel the pain and grief that had been building up inside her. It was like a dam had burst, and everything was coming out in waves.
She wept into Caitlyn's shoulder, feeling the tears stream down her face. She didn't care anymore about being strong or pretending that she was okay. There was no point. Not anymore.
