Chapter: Mission in the Desert
Deployment
The hum of the aircraft engines was a low, steady drone that filled the cabin, mingling with the rustle of gear and the occasional murmur of soldiers in quiet conversation. Lilly sat with her back straight, the weight of her tactical vest pressing into her shoulders, her rifle resting between her knees. She ran a hand over the patch on her sleeve—an unconscious gesture of reassurance. The mission ahead loomed large in her mind, but her thoughts kept drifting back home, to Leah.
Tommy sat across from her, his eyes bright with the familiar mix of excitement and tension. He caught her gaze and grinned. "You look like you're thinking too hard, Coop."
Lilly smirked. "Someone has to, Tommy."
He leaned back against the hard metal of the transport plane's interior. "Relax. We've done worse."
"Doesn't mean it gets any easier." Her voice softened as she glanced out the small window, the darkness outside vast and endless. "Thinking about Leah."
Tommy's grin faded to something more thoughtful. "Yeah. I get it. Been thinking about Mara too."
Lilly's expression softened. "How is she?"
"Stressed. You know how she gets when we're deployed." He paused. "She worries about you too."
Lilly smiled. "She's a good friend. Leah says the same about you."
Tommy shrugged, a small, fond smile on his lips. "We're all a weird little family, aren't we?"
Lilly nodded, her thoughts drifting back to the last time she saw Leah, the way they'd held each other, both pretending the goodbye wasn't as hard as it felt. "Yeah. We are."
The Briefing
The airbase outside Tel Aviv was a flurry of activity, soldiers moving with purpose, the distant sound of helicopters slicing through the night. Lilly and Tommy were escorted to a small, utilitarian briefing room, the walls lined with maps and digital screens displaying live intel. Major Carter stood at the front, his posture rigid, his expression serious.
"Alright, listen up," Major Carter's voice cut through the room. "The intel we've gathered points to a terrorist cell operating out of the Negev Desert. They're stockpiling weapons, possibly planning a large-scale attack. Your mission is to infiltrate their base of operations, gather any intel you can, and, if necessary, neutralize the threat."
Lilly exchanged a glance with Tommy. They'd been on similar missions before, but each one carried its own weight, its own risks.
Major Carter continued. "You'll move under the cover of darkness. Extraction point is five clicks south of the target location. Stay sharp. Dismissed."
As they exited the briefing room, Tommy nudged Lilly. "Piece of cake, right?"
Lilly rolled her eyes. "You always say that."
"And I'm always right."
"Except when you're not."
Tommy laughed, the sound a brief respite from the tension. "Fair enough."
The Desert
The desert was a vast, silent expanse, the moon casting long shadows across the sand. Lilly and Tommy moved in tandem, their footsteps barely making a sound. The village they approached was small, almost forgotten, nestled between rocky outcroppings. Through their scopes, they spotted movement—figures shifting crates into a low, stone building.
"Looks like we found them," Tommy whispered.
Lilly nodded, her eyes narrowing. "We'll go in quiet. Take a closer look."
