LEENA

I watched as Reyna quickly moved to get off of Matt's lap.

In the process of moving, she had hit her head against the roof of the car. Matt looked at her in concern and said something that I couldn't hear from the outside, although he was probably just asking her if she was okay.

So I guess everyone had something to hide. Is that like a trend around here now or something?

I mean Angel was acting weird, Lilith wasn't acting like her usual self, and now I'm finding out that these two were having a fucking rendezvous in the school parking lot.

I wasn't even mad at her, but I couldn't help but feel like everyone that I knew was hiding something and I hated that I was left out.

Reyna stumbles out of the car, a look of clear panic etched on her face. "Leena, you can't tell anyone." She pleads, making her way over to where I'm rooted to my spot.

"I don't understand," my brows furrow in complete confusion. "Why would it matter if anyone knew?" I ask, trying to understand how what they were doing was wrong. I wasn't going to tell anyone, but I had to know.

"Because it'll just make everything weird and I don't feel like dealing with that shit." She sighs, messaging her temples in an attempt to calm herself down. Matt stops at her side and my gaze moves to the faint hickeys on his neck.

Who exactly were they trying to fool? Making out in a parking lot and in a car with no tinted windows wasn't very much of a smart move.

My lips purse. "So are you guys like, together?"

At my question, Matt's cheeks redden and Reyna is quick to deny it. "Oh, absolutely not." She laughs humorlessly before patting Matt's shoulder in what her idea of a friendly gesture is.

"Why don't I talk to you about this somewhere more private?" She waits patiently for my response, and after a brief pause, I nod, observing as she turns to speak to Matt.

After they exchange a few words, he gets back into his car before driving off.

He seemed different around Reyna. While I only saw them together for a short period of time, it was obvious how different he treated her.

We begin to head over to my car, which is not too far away.

"So," I start, getting myself situated into the driver's seat. "What's going on between the two of you, then?" I glance over at her as she leans back in her seat.

"We struck up a deal. He'd help me study and pass my classes and in return we'd hookup." She says it like it's nothing, examining her red nails in boredom.

"I didn't take Matt for that kind of guy," I chuckle, thinking back to his reddened cheeks earlier when I had asked if the two were together.

This was the last thing that I had expected from them. If I hadn't caught them in the car, they probably would've continued to keep whatever they were doing on the low.

She shrugs, leaning her arm onto the door. "I didn't either, honestly I was surprised when he brought up the idea."

Hold on, what?

I turn to look at her once again, shock etched on my face. "He was the one to bring up the idea?" I question, surprised by the revelation.

She nods. "Plus, it worked out for me anyway since my parents were nagging me about my grades." Reyna shakes her head at the thought, letting out a sigh.

"How long has this been going on?" Now that I think about it, Matt always seemed to act weird when Reyna was around. Even at the basketball court a week ago he was acting odd.

"About a week and a half now, I think." Not long after she speaks, her phone begins to ring. I watch as she looks down at the caller id, a breath escaping her lips. "It's my mom, I have to be home to help set the table for dinner. My brother's back in town."

A pang of slight interest appears at the mention of her brother. "I didn't know you had a brother."

She then quickly explained to me that he attended college a couple of hours away from here and that he was coming down to visit.

I nod as she leans over the center console to give me a hug. I chuckle, watching as she steps out of the car, answering the phone while heading towards her own car in the almost empty parking lot.

"So you and Mitch are good now, right?" I hold my phone up to my ear, laying on my stomach while on call with Lilith.

I hear rustling sounds from the other end of the line, assuming that she was also getting comfortable on her bed. "Yeah, I apologized and everything," she says, her voice carrying the usual giddiness that I've missed so much more than I thought I did. "I can't believe I ignored him like that, I feel terrible. It wasn't even his fault."

What wasn't his fault? I felt so out of the loop with her, and I anxiously wanted to know what had caused her to act the way she did. "What do you mean?"

The line falls silent after my question, and I quickly regret having asked it.

"I'm sorry, Leena. I don't want to talk about it right now." She whispers quietly and I hear the sadness in her voice.

I knew better than to press further, so I apologized for asking. She reassured me that it wasn't my fault and that I was simply just curious.

Gosh, she was too understanding for her own good.

My thoughts drift back to the earlier events when I caught Reyna and Matt. I desperately wanted to tell her, but I couldn't. Reyna had trusted me to keep it a secret, and it wasn't mine to share.

"What about you and Angel?" She asks after a moment. Her words make my brows knit in confusion.

"What about me and Angel?" I knew what she was getting at and I didn't like it, not one bit.

Why did everyone assume that we had something going on?

"Has anything happened between the two of you?" Lilith's voice raises in excitement, contrary to a couple of moments ago.

I sigh. "He wants me to leave him alone." The more that I think about it, the more upset that I get. If he would just communicate with me, things would be so much easier.

I hear choking from the other end of the line, and a wave of concern washes over me. "Are you okay?" I ask, but she dismisses it, explaining that she had just choked on her water.

After clearing her throat, she croaks. "Huh? Why?" I can almost see her frown based off of the tone in her voice that she used.

"I honestly don't know." I hated that he wouldn't open up to me—that he wouldn't let me in.

I wish I knew why.
