It was late, and the buzz of the show was still humming in my veins. The city below seemed to blur, lights blinking like stars scattered across the sky. I sat on the balcony of our hotel room, legs dangling over the edge, a quiet smile creeping across my face. The adrenaline rush was starting to settle into something warmer now—something softer.
I wasn't expecting him to come out, but I felt his presence before I saw him. It was always like that with Duff. His energy, his way of moving, filled the space around him. He stepped outside, leaning against the doorframe, his arms folded casually across his chest. His eyes locked on me with that playful glint I loved.
"You're out here alone?" he asked, his voice low and smooth, just like I remembered from every late-night conversation we'd ever had.
I shrugged, not looking at him just yet. "Needed some air."
Duff walked over and sat beside me, his hand brushing against mine before he settled down, our shoulders touching like it always did when we were close. We didn't need to say anything for a moment, just basking in the quiet comfort of each other's presence.
"You've been quiet tonight," he said after a beat, his voice soft and understanding.
I glanced at him, finding the concern in his gaze. It wasn't the first time he'd asked me that question, but tonight, it felt different. There was something more comforting in the way he looked at me, something that made me want to open up.
"Just... thinking about us," I admitted, my eyes fixed on the city below. "About how lucky I am to have you."
His hand found mine, fingers curling around mine gently. He always had a way of making me feel safe, like the world outside of us didn't matter. It was just him and me, and nothing else.
"I feel the same way," Duff replied, squeezing my hand lightly. "I think about you all the time, Steven. About how we've made it through everything together—good and bad—and come out stronger. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me."
His words melted any lingering doubt or worry I'd had. I turned to face him fully, my heart racing at the tenderness in his voice. There were so many times in the past where I never thought I'd have something like this—something real, something stable. But here I was, with him, sharing a quiet moment under the stars, and it felt like home.
"I love you," I whispered, the words so simple, but they felt like the truest thing I could say.
Duff's eyes softened, and his smile widened, warm and genuine. "I love you too, Steven."
He leaned in then, his lips finding mine in a soft kiss. It was gentle at first, a silent promise. But as our lips met again, it deepened, full of the love we had for each other, the kind that didn't need to be explained. We'd been through so much together—had our ups and downs—but in this moment, everything was perfect.
We pulled back slowly, and I rested my head against his shoulder, letting the stillness settle around us. The world outside felt distant now, nothing more than background noise. It was just me and him, happy in this moment, together.
"I don't want this night to end," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.
Duff chuckled softly, his arm wrapping around me. "Then let's make it last as long as we can."
And we did. The night stretched on, our quiet laughter and soft words the only soundtrack. I knew, no matter what happened tomorrow, or the day after, this—us—was the real thing. And I wasn't going to let go of it.
