December 23rd, 1987

The snow was falling in Los Angeles, a rare kind of cold pressing against the windows. I was losing myself again, slipping further away from reality. I didn't know how far I'd gone until the darkness swallowed me whole.

I woke up to the sterile lights of the hospital, my body aching, the world blurry. The last thing I remembered was the rush, the void. Then I saw him—Mick, standing at the edge of my hospital bed, eyes red, face pale, his hands trembling at his sides. I'd never seen him cry before.

Later, I found out he'd seen the news, heard about my overdose on TV. Without a second thought, he'd jumped on his motorcycle, tearing through the icy streets, his heart pounding as he raced to my apartment. The paramedics had already arrived, blocking his way as he skidded to a stop in front of the flashing lights. They told him I was gone, lifeless for a moment too long before they brought me back. But Mick refused to believe it. He fought to get past them, screaming my name, desperate to see me, to hold me, to make sure I was really still breathing.

Now, here he was, standing before me, broken and vulnerable in a way I'd never seen. His breath hitched, tears streaming down his face as he whispered, "I thought I'd lost you."

My throat tightened, my own tears welling up as I reached for his hand, feeling the warmth of his skin against mine. "Mick... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

His grip tightened around my fingers, his voice shaking. "Don't you ever scare me like that again, Nikki. I can't lose you. I love you too much."

And in that moment, as fragile as I felt, I knew I wasn't alone. Mick was here. He'd always be here.
