I know something's up with Alex.
It's not like he's acting weird, exactly—he's still the same goofy, lovable dork I fell in love with. But there's something different in the way he fidgets when we talk, the way his knee bounces when we're sitting on the couch, the way he looks at me like he's about to say something big... and then chickens out at the last second.
I catch him staring at me more than usual, and every time I turn to meet his gaze, he blushes and looks away. It's adorable, but it also makes me wonder what's going on inside that beautiful, scattered mind of his.
So tonight, as we sit on the balcony of our little place in Seattle, overlooking the city lights, I decide to poke the bear.
"Okay, Lifeson," I say, stretching my legs out and nudging his knee with my foot. "Spill it."
He nearly chokes on his beer, coughing into his fist before looking at me like a deer in headlights. "S-Spill what?"
I smirk. "You tell me. You've been acting like you swallowed a whole drum kit and forgot how to talk."
Alex laughs—this nervous, breathy kind of laugh—and rubs the back of his neck. "What? Nooo, I'm totally normal. Just regular ol' me."
I raise an eyebrow. "Uh-huh. Because 'regular ol' you' doesn't usually turn into a human-shaped ball of nerves for no reason."
He sighs dramatically, setting his beer down and running a hand through his curly blonde hair. "Okay. Fine. Maybe I've got something on my mind."
I cross my arms, waiting. "And?"
He shifts in his seat, takes a deep breath... and then grabs his beer again, taking a long sip like it might give him courage.
I bite my lip to keep from laughing. "Alex."
"Yeah?"
I roll my eyes. "You're killing me here, baby."
He groans, dragging a hand down his face before suddenly standing up. "Alright, alright! I'm doing it!"
I blink. "Doing what?"
Then, to my absolute shock, Alex drops to one knee.
My breath catches in my throat.
"Okay," he starts, looking up at me with those bright, anxious eyes. "So, uh... I had this whole speech planned, but my brain is basically pudding right now, so I'm just gonna wing it."
I press a hand to my mouth, my heart pounding.
"I love you, Nancy," he says, his voice soft but certain. "Like... so much that I can't even function half the time. You're my best friend, my partner, my favorite person in the whole damn universe." He lets out a nervous chuckle. "And I know I can be a total dork sometimes—okay, a lot of the time—but I swear, I will spend the rest of my life making you laugh, making you happy, and just... being the best version of me that I can be. For you."
My eyes start to blur with tears.
"So," Alex continues, fumbling into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box. He flips it open, revealing the most beautiful ring I've ever seen. "Will you marry me?"
I don't even let him sweat for a second.
"Yes," I breathe, nodding furiously. "Yes!"
His face lights up like a goddamn Christmas tree, and he jumps up, slipping the ring onto my finger before pulling me into the tightest hug, spinning me around in circles.
I'm laughing through my happy tears, holding onto him for dear life. "Alex, put me down!"
"Never!" he declares dramatically, but eventually, he sets me back on my feet, grinning like a fool. "Holy shit, you actually said yes!"
I cup his face in my hands, kissing him soundly. "Of course I said yes, you goof. I love you."
He beams, his hands settling on my waist. "I love you more."
I hesitate for a second, feeling my heart do a whole damn gymnastics routine in my chest. Because now? Now is the perfect time to tell him.
"Actually," I whisper, resting my forehead against his, "there's something else, too."
Alex blinks. "Huh? What do you—"
I take his hand and gently press it against my stomach.
It takes him a second. One long, silent second.
And then—
His eyes go huge.
"Wait. Are you—?" His voice cracks mid-sentence, and I have to bite my lip to keep from laughing.
I nod, my own eyes filling with fresh tears. "Yeah, Alex. I'm pregnant."
I swear, his brain short-circuits.
His mouth opens. Then closes. Then opens again.
I can practically hear the wheels turning in his head.
"Are you serious?" he finally manages, his voice barely above a whisper.
"Dead serious."
For a moment, he just stares at me. And then, with absolutely zero warning, he lets out the loudest, most ridiculous squeal I've ever heard and starts jumping around like an excited kid.
"OH MY GOD! I'M GONNA BE A DAD!"
I burst out laughing as he spins in circles, running his hands through his hair like he has no idea what to do with all his energy.
"WE'RE GONNA HAVE A BABY! I NEED TO—OH, SHIT—DO WE HAVE TO BUY STUFF?! DO I NEED TO READ BOOKS?! OH MY GOD, DO I NEED TO STOP SWEARING?!"
"Alex," I giggle, grabbing his hands to calm him down. "Breathe."
He takes a huge, dramatic breath. "Okay. I'm breathing." Then, a few seconds later— "HOLY CRAP, I'M GONNA BE A DAD!"
I shake my head, laughing as I pull him into another hug, pressing my lips against his cheek. "Yes, baby. You are."
He exhales shakily, finally starting to calm down as he cups my face in his hands. "I don't know how to be a dad," he admits softly.
I smile, leaning into his touch. "You don't have to figure it out alone. We'll do this together."
His eyes soften, and he nods. "Together."
I press a kiss to his lips, slow and sweet. "I love you, Alex."
He grins against my mouth. "I love you more, Mrs. Lifeson."
And just like that, my heart is completely his.
