Chapter 32: The Cruelest Punishment is Space and Time
My eyes were heavy with sorrow and misery as I lay in bed and recalled the last time I had seen Maxim. It was just before they hauled him off to the dungeons to start his sentence of indefinite imprisonment.
I broke free of Gabe’s hold and rushed toward the arena floor with him trailing behind me, quietly muttering obscenities. I was stopped abruptly at the gates by two of the hooded figures who stared at me as though I were crazy for approaching them. I guess it wasn’t customary to allow the imprisoned a final visit before he was taken into custody and thrown into a dark hole never to be seen or heard from again. I noticed Dorsey glaring at Max and appearing seemingly disappointed with the outcome of the trial.
The thought alone made my heart ache severely and caused me to shudder in pain at the thought of losing him. My pleading eyes found Gabe’s expressionless ones and he smiled gently at me, then sighed and threw an authoritative glance at first Dorsey, who was standing behind the henchmen, and then the two men who stood between me and my undying love.
They parted like the Red Sea and allowed me to pass moments later. I guess it’s favorable to have friends in high places and to be bonded to a member of what is considered a royal family in the mystical world. Though the perks were appreciated, they still weren’t enough to free Max from his sentence.
I ran to him, hastily and clumsily, almost tripping over the stupid formal dress the brothers forced me to wear. I wasn’t one for dressing so femininely, but I didn’t have a choice when faced with such an important and formal gathering in the mystical realm. Who was I to hurt our chances of Maxim getting off with a lighter sentence by wearing inappropriate and offensive attire?
Max was still bound by his magical chains to the stone pillar, but that did not deter me from wrapping my arms around his neck and pressing my lips to his forcefully and passionately. I wasn’t about to allow some damned magic spell to keep me from touching him, holding him and kissing him for what may be that last time in a very long time. That miserable thought caused fear and panic to rise in me, but it subsided when I heard and felt a soft chuckle from him.
“Still can’t resist my charms huh cheri, even when I’m bound in chains? I’ll admit it’s a sexy look, although I’d rather have you bound so I can have my wicked way with you.” Max spoke slyly, in his smooth accented voice which resonated in my ears and caused my heart to flutter mercilessly. I pulled away from him only to see his sexy smirk plastered all over his face.
“Very funny Maxy.” I smacked his arm gently and scolded him with a glare. I immediately felt bad about my actions and snuggled closer to him once again, burying my face in his neck and inhaling his scent that was so deeply ingrained in my memory. I was going to miss this, miss him too much for words.
“I love you Max.” I whispered, standing on my toes and stretching to bring my mouth close enough to his ear to graze it playfully and cause a tingling reaction that I felt reverberate through our closely pressed bodies.
“I love you Trinity, and I told you not worry about me.” Max replied as though he was scolding me now.
He sighed and turned his head so he could once again meet my lips with his soft and warm ones. The kiss was intense, with his tongue in my mouth massaging mine and fighting it restlessly. He pressed his body closer to mine, which was quite a feat considering he was tied to a stone pillar and was without the use of his upper body. I pushed myself closer to him, feeling his lips moving hungrily with mine.
