KABIR'S POV:
The smile on my face just can't cease. The amount of happiness I feel spreading within me, now that I got to see her after six freaking months is jus immeasurable. All these months, I had absolutely no idea what she'd been up to. I didn't even get to see a glimpse of her. But now that I feel her presence so close to me, my soul feels like its found a small part of it back. Only a part because I am not going to be fully satisfied without winning her back. After all, that's the major purpose behind me being here.
As much happiness was displayed on my face, the despair on her was could amounted to be double of that. Though foolish, a small part of me hoped that she would be at least a little happy to see me, now that six months had passed to our fight. But her expression speaks depths. She doesn't want me here, and my mere presence makes her feel as if an entire cluster of spiders have been crawling through her spine.
Yeah, what a fool I am.
But I didn't let any of that dishearten me. I came here, knowing that things wouldn't be easy. So I don't expect them to be.
She wants groveling? She'll get a hell lot of groveling.
I small part of me was lost in its own thoughts and a larger part was lost in my beloved's eyes when I heard Mrs. Baylor calling out my name.
Mrs. Baylor: Kabir, dear? How about you find a seat for yourself. Since we're already late and more than half of time allotted for this class has been passed, we'll just try to brush up on what's been done till now. If you have a problem or if you find it difficult to follow, you could most definitely ask for the help of your classmates and I am available as well.
I gave her a genuine smile before nodding and muttering a gentle thank you to her.
As I started roaming my gaze throughout the room to find a seat for myself, a genuine smile spread on my face as the one beside Nandu was the only empty seat in the entire lecture hall. She might have realized it as well, because the expression on her face were total opposite to that of mine. Not being bummed about it at all, I made my way towards the seat and settled down beside her. She squirmed in her seat and tried to move away as far as possible but how much could you move away in a chair? Well, not much. And I was loving that she couldn't move any far away from me.
Mrs. Baylor: Alright then, if everyone's settled, shall we start with the class?
Everyone presented their acceptance and Mrs. Baylor started to catch up on the topics covered till date.
Me? I was busy staring at the love of my life who was sitting beside me, with her gaze completely fixed on Mrs. Baylor's face. But the slight trembling of her fingers didn't go un-noticed by me. She was very much aware of my presence. And that brought yet another smile on my face.
It hasn't even been more than 15 minutes that I've been near this girl and look how much I've been smiling.
I was too busy staring at my one and only when a pretty-faced blond turned her face towards me which I noticed was holding a scowl.
Bridget: Dude, does your neck have a problem or something? Why can't you just face forward and pay attention to what's being taught?
Feisty. Judging by her reaction, I am pretty much sure that Nandu has already told her about me and it very well seems that the feisty blond is definitely Anti-Kabir.
Kabir: Its not my neck that has a problem, its your friend's face.
I feel Nandu stiffening when I undeniably acknowledged her presence. It was as if we were sitting side by side but yet, we were strangers. But now, there was no escaping.
Bridget: Huh? what do you even mean? Did you hit your head somewhere?
Kabir: Naah. What I said is absolutely right. Its not my neck that has a problem. Its your friend's face. She's too pretty for me to look at something else.
The blonde's faced formed a little o, shock evident on her face. I know the pick up line was cheesy but hey, I couldn't stop myself. I was seeing her after a long time. But Nandu looks like she isn't affected even a bit by what I said.
Confusion must be evident on my face because the blond beside my best friend snorts and continues to laugh.
Kabir: What's so funny?
Bridget: Everything about you! You really think you would utter an unbelievably cheesy pick up line and my girl here would go all crazy about it? You need to grow up.
Kabir: Well, I expected her to get a little crazy at least.
Bridget: Naah. She gets these pick up lines and compliments all the time. Even better than yours to be honest. You need to up your game or stop annoying the fvck out of us.
Kabir: Woahh, chill down, blondie. I know what would make her go crazy much better than you do.
She looked as if she's ready for a fight.
Bridget: Oh! you bet!
I was trying to come up with another response when the honey voice I'd been dying to listen to all these while falls into my ears.
Nandini: You guys need to stop talking as if I am not right here.
Bridget: Oooohhh! someone finally got a tongue to speak!
I don't know why but that blonde girl had started to get on my nerves. How peaceful would it be if I had absolutely no intervention and I could just sit here and stare at the girl beside me who happens to be the most beautiful girl in the world.
But before that, I need to make sure that blondie doesn't open her mouth once again.
Kabir: Hey listen blondie, as much as I appreciate you trying to keep me entertained with those next to foolish replies of yours, I would really like it if you just kept your mouth shut and let me do my work in piece.
Bridget: Its not blondie, you mentally retarded human. My name is Bridget and no you don't get to call me at all. Not by my name and not by that sick nickname as well. And what work do you have anyways? Just to sit here and stare at my best friend?
Kabir: Jokes on you! she's my best friend-
Mrs. Baylor: And that's it for today. We'll continue in the next class. You all may leave.
Everyone started to move out of the classroom. But who cared about everyone? All I cared about was that the girl for whom I am here is also leaving the lecture hall as if her feet are on fire. I try my best to catch up on her but she's already ahead of me.
Just when I thought that I'd reached her, I was stopped my Mrs. Baylor. No jokes, I love Mrs. Baylor but right now if I was would be asked who I hated most on this planet? I would definitely say Mrs. Baylor.
Mrs. Baylor: Hey there, young man. Come on here. I need to have a discussion with you.
As much as I would love to reject her, I can't do it. Not if I want to stay here.
Kabir: Yes, Mrs. Baylor?
Mrs. Baylor: Since you're here after a duration of 6 months, you've already missed on a lot of portions. We already have our date for the submission of the first assignment around the corner, and as much as I would to believe that you are an absolute genius, catching up on so much of missed content without any help would be almost next to impossible even for a scholar. So I am guessing you would definitely need some help.
I was trying my best to not show the urgency on my face. With Nandu almost out of the lecture hall, catching up on missed lessons is the last thing on my mind. And not to mention, this campus is so huge that there's no way I would find her if she leaves this room. And me being new here doesn't help at all. It might take me weeks to just know a quarter of this campus.
Mrs. Baylor: So I decided to help you by assigning you a tutor. You don't have to worry, she won't bug you much. You'll just have to spend an hour or two everyday to catch up on everything you've missed.
Now this is where my face scrunched in grimace. I had absolutely no interest in keeping a tutor for myself. Not if she is a girl, especially. I don't want to be around any girl but Nandu.
Kabir: I really appreciate your offer, Mrs. Baylor. But I-
Mrs. Baylor: Nandini my dear? Could you please come here?
As soon as she called out Nandu's name, my lips shut themselves up. It was as if they were stuck to each other.
A wave of warmth again spread throughout my body when I hear her voice once again.
Nandini: Yes, Mrs. Baylor?
Mrs. Baylor: Remember I'd asked you to help me by tutoring a student the other day?
Oh I totally know where this is going. And I would be lying if I tell that I don't like this. Who was that fool who was rejecting to keep a tutor, huh? Tutors are great. They're your saviours. They hold your hand and help you walk towards the success. In conclusion, having a tutor is great.
Especially if it is the girl that you love.
But as Nandini spoke, hesitation was evident in her voice. No use, darling. You're stuck with me. Thoroughly this time.
Nandini: Yes, Mrs. Baylor. I do remember.
Mrs. Baylor: I am glad. So meet Kabir. This is the student you'll be tutoring.
The smile that I'd been fighting to keep from showing on my face finally breaks out. My smile is so huge that one could count all my teeth if they just stood in front of me.
Nandini: Yeah, about that. Umm, I am sorry Mrs. Baylor. The thing is that I have so many classes to attend and also with the assignment coming up, I am not really sure if I would be able to tutor-
Mrs. Baylor: Oh come on Nandini. We both know that if anyone could pull off attending classes and tutoring a student, then its only you. I must tell you, Kabir. Nandini might be an arts student, but she excels in marketing. Much better than students who major in business.
My chest swells up with pride. This is the girl I've known all my life. One thing she does perfectly? being perfect.
Mrs. Baylor: You won't let me down, will you? Nandini?
Hesitation was still visible on Nandu's face and I would eat sand than let this opportunity slip away from my hand.
Kabir: Oh thank you Mrs. Baylor! Now that I think about what you said, catching up on lessons alone without anyone's help would actually be really difficult for me. I really appreciate your effort! I would love it if Nandini tutors me.
Mrs. Baylor gives me a toothy grin, a clear sign that she's impressed. Now, there's no way for Nandu to escape. You all might think that I am a shitty guy, but hey! I needed every opportunity to be close to her if I wanted to win her back!
Mrs. Baylor: See Nandini! what a gentleman he is. You should definitely help him. Remember that saying? The good that you do stays with you.
I could hear Nandu gritting her teeth and I tried very hard to hold in my laughter. There's no way she's going to back away now. She's too drowned for that.
Nandini: *gritted teeth* Yes, Mrs. Baylor. I would love to help this gentleman. I'll discuss the schedule with him later. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a class to attend.
Venom was dripping from her mouth when she uttered the word gentleman. Oh my queen of sarcasm. I can't help but fall harder for her viciousness.
I bid Mrs. Baylor goodbye and ran behind Nandu. All the conversations we've had till now involved a third person in them. Sooner or later, we need to start talking to each other. And as they say, sooner the better. And hey how was going to make her fall for me again if I don't even speak to her?
i see her pacing out of the building at an unhumanly speed and to hell with me if I didn't put good use of those six months I'd worked out in gym. No matter how fast, she was still a shorty and I would definitely catch up on her.
It doesn't take me more than two minutes to reach behind her. She was just about to exit the building and I caught her by her arm.
On fvcking time this time!
She turned around and pinned me with an icy glare.
Kabir: H-Hi.
Yeah. I definitely had to stutter.
Did she respond to my greeting with a greeting? definitely not. She won't be Nandu if she does.
Nandini: Let. go. of. my. hand.
Kabir: woah! calm down! I call you my panda. But looks like you've become a tigress now.
Nandini: What I've become and what I am going to become is none of your damn business.
I would be lying if her words didn't feel like a stab on my heart. It felt as if she didn't want me in her life anymore. But more than this was needed to shoo me away.
Kabir: Itni hoshiyaar hai. toh hi ka jawab hi se hi dedeti.
(You're so clever. You could've replied to my hi with a hi.)
Nandini: Agar apni buddhi bail buddhiyon ke saamne dikhaane lagi toh aise lagega jaise bhains ke aage been bajarahi hu.
(If I start displaying my intelligence against dumb people then it might appear as if I've been blowing a trumpet in front of a buffalo.)
A genuine laughter broke out of my chest upon hearing her snarky comment. This is the girl I am absolutely, undeniably and completely in love with. The love of my life who's also my best friend. Now my only aim is to gain her friendship back and make her fall in love with me again.
After my laughter died, I stood there, staring into her eyes. I still hadn't let go of her hand. I was scared that if I let go of it now, then I might never be able to hold it again.
But I couldn't let negativity take over me. I had one major purpose for being here and I won't leave without fulfilling it.
The silence stretched for too long. I was becoming more and more nervous as the time passed and she was becoming more and more impatient.
Nandini: See, if you don't have anything important-
Kabir: Kaisi hai?
(How are you?)
She looked as if cat caught her tongue. She definitely didn't expect this of me. But I had no idea why this simple question caught her by surprise. Maybe she didn't know the answer.
Nandini: Abhi tak toh thik thi. Agar tu mujhse dur rahega toh aage bhi thik rahungi.
(I was okay until now. And I'll be okay in the future as well if you stay away from me.)
That went right through my heart. Injuring it to an extreme extent and then left it to bleed.
Kabir: Bas thik? Lekin mai toh tujhe yahan khush karne aaya hu.
(Just okay? But I am here to make you happy.)
She left out an unbelievable chuckle and stared right through my soul.
Nandini: The guy who's hurt me the most till date is here to make me happy. How ironic isn't it?
Kabir: Nandu, I know I've hurt you but-
Nandini: But what huh? Dekha nahi gaya tujhse ki mai yahan akeli hi acche se sambhaalrahi hu khudko? Yaa fir tera ego hurt hogaya ki mai tujhe bina bataye yahan aagayi? Teri problem kya hai kabir?? Tu chahta kya hai mujhse?
(Couldn't you watch me handling myself all good over here? or was your ego hurt that I went away without informing you? What is your problem even? What do you want from me?)
Kabir: Tujhe Chahta hu.
(I want you.)
Nandini: Kya?
(What?)
And even before we could continue our conversation, there were fire alarms everywhere. Everyone started pacing around in the corridors, running as if their life depended on it. People were pushing each other, least bothered that they could be hurting another person.
VOICE: Fire! there's fire in the building! run everyone!
All I had on my mind was Nandu. I wanted her to be safe. I pulled her towards me and the both of us tried to run outside the building but the entrance was too jampacked even for a fly to escape.
Everyone was panicked around as. No one knew what to do.
Good lord! Not even one complete day of me being here and the hell was already let loose.
Nandini: I know an emergency exit! let's get out of here.
This time, she was the one holding my hand. And even though this isn't a situation which one must enjoy, I would be lying if I said I didn't have butterflies playing badminton in my tummy.
She kept running ahead of me while holding my hand and I just kept following her while grinning like a fool. This moment could last forever and I wouldn't feel bored for even a second.
But as they say, every good thing has an end, this one had to end too. We were now standing in front of the emergency exit and Nandu had let go of my hand.
Couldn't she keep holding my hand and do whatever she was doing?
I was still lost in my own thoughts when her startled voice brought me back to the earth.
Nandini: The door isn't opening. Its stuck! oh my god what do we even do?!
Panic was clearly evident on her face and I can't see her stressing.
Kabir: Step back. Let me try.
For once after so many months, she listened to me and stepped back.
Chal beta Kabir, 6 Mahine ki gym ki taakat dikhaade.
(Come on Kabir, show the strength you've built in the gym for 6 months.)
I prepared myself and started kicking the door at the latch.
first attempt? total failure.
second attempt? nope.
I took in a deep breath, and prepared myself.
Aaj toh impress karke rahunga.
(I will impress her at any cost today.)
And the door finally broke open at the third attempt. A sense of victory clouded my brain as I turned around, with a shit eating grin spread all over my face.
Now I would save Nandu and make her hate me a little less.
except, when I turned around, she was no where to be seen.
Where the hell did she just vanish?!
