Chapter 55
Percy had lucked out.
It had been an eight and a half walk to the nearest town. They had gotten turned around and had to rest and had a few dozen mosquito bites each. But they were okay. Percy's arms ached like nothing he had ever imagined but declined Kyle's many offers to take her. Kyle's non-existent muscles would not be able to take her weight. The sun was beginning its decent and Percy was this close to falling apart.
What worried him was how Keeli had not awaken yet. Her pulse was still there. He had checked every time they stopped, each time more relieved than before that she was still alive.
The moment they entered the town, Percy broke out into a sprint towards the nearest house.
The house was small and looked like a rustic cottage with white chipped paint. It looked like it was a mile walk to the down town area that looked about as small as any small town he had ever come across.
Running up the steps with the last part of his strength made his muscles burn with pain with each bounce of her body in his arms. Percy realized he had no hands. Looking behind him, he saw that Kyle and Lily were still a few minutes away. He had forgotten, again, how powerful he was compared to mortals. It was times like these, he was thankful for it.
Turning around he banged on the door with his foot.
A minute later a small woman opened the door. Percy had had is fair share of old women who secretly wanted to kill him. he thought of Medusa who had welcomed him into her emporium before she tried to turn them to stone and of Juno who disguised herself as an old hippy lady in order to make Percy carry her across the river in New Rome and eventually fight all of her battles that almost-most every single moment-meant certain death. Percy was so happy to know that this was not his dimension.
"What do you want?" the woman asked in a thick southern accent and a grouchy tone. Percy looked down at Keeli who was passed out and had dried blood in her hair. He could feel all of the wounds on his hands, back, legs, and arms that wouldn't heal because of all of the walking he had done.
Was this woman serious? He asked himself in disbelief.
"My friends and I got into a car accident and we need help," Percy said with the upmost urgency. The woman blinked.
"So?" she asked putting a hand on her thick hip. Percy was about to knock this- he forced himself not to think of the B word as he thought- out.
"My friend might be dying," Percy said, "Please help us."
"That Aunt my responsibility kid," she said, "I am not letting some smelly kids into my house so that I can get robbed." Percy's eyes widened in disbelief. With one glance behind the woman at the thirty year old TV set and the old furniture he was disgusted. Knowing that this woman wouldn't let them in no matter what he spoke his mind.
"Listen lady," he said the word with as much disgust as he could put into the word, "My friend might die, we have been walking for eight hours to find medical help. And if you are too selfish about your dinosaur TV set and your ratted old furniture that you don't want to help us, then shame on you." Percy stared her down with all of the anger that he had been holding in for weeks, "I cannot believe cockroaches like you exist in this world." Percy said.
The lady was so stunned that she just stood there for a moment before she slammed the door shut in his face.
Percy sighed. He walked down the steps and looked towards the next house and prayed that they were better human beings then this old hag. The walk was not too bad, it would take about ten more minutes to reach it, Percy estimated.
