CHAPTER 9
Several people gasped. They had good reason too, for the Great Hall was truly magical. For starters there was no ceiling. Or at least it appeared so, but then Rose whispered in my ear that it was designed to reflect the sky above it. At the moment, the sky- no, ceiling- was a midnight blue, with the occasional white star. I drew my gaze away from the ceiling, downwards, and saw a sea of children (well, I say children but they're older than me) all dressed in black, all sitting at one of the four long tables. They were all staring at us- or at the front, where I now saw was a long high table where all the teachers sat. In the middle, was a lady- she had a rather young look in her eyes, but otherwise, she looked much older. We walked down the middle of the tables, all the children staring at either us or a black beaten pointed hat sitting- or should I say placed on a three legged stool? We all gathered round in a corner beside the stool, and the students who had been looking at us suddenly stared expectantly at the hat. As though waiting for something?
To my utter bewilderment, the hat suddenly opened its brim and began to speak...
"For centuries now, this school has stood,
On four pillars of ground earth,
Namely of those founders four,
Who gave this school it's birth.

Years ago they sorted students
Into separate groups,
The Brave, the Wise, Cunning and Kind
Whichever they would suit.

Now, today, they're dead and gone,
The job was left to me,
So place me on your head, young ones,
I'll tell what you'll be.

Will it be Gryffindor my friends,
Where bravery comes alive?
Not necessarily to be shown outwards,
But inside it will thrive,

Or Ravenclaw, the clever bunch,
Might make you feel at home,
Not only wise, but creative,
You may end up quite well-known.

Don't leave out Slytherin, where they,
Have cunning specialties,
Most ambitions will be achieved,
Despite the casualties,

But maybe Hufflepuff's for you,
A kind and loyal one?
Don't treat them as pushovers, though-
Be disloyal and they will shun!

So which of the four admirable lot,
Will be the one for you?
So relax, while I choose your way,
This is your future's clue."

The school suddenly burst into applause. Lena was laughing at me and I suddenly realised my mouth was open!

"What the fuck! Jesus Christ it's a talking hat!" I swore in shock.
"Language!" Lena said sternly, suddenly ceasing her laughter.
I was about to tell that now I knew how to make her stop laughing at me, when a voice behind me spoke first.
"Yes, I do think swearing is most disrespectful, and it is extremely unbecoming of a lady to swear. And please do not say the Lord's name in vain. He was sent to earth to guide the human race. He died to free us of sin, and using his name in such context is bad payback!" The girl who had worn a stern face suddenly smiled and held out her hand,
"I'm Maria Spencer, and you are..."
"Asha, Asha Karthi," I replied suddenly coming out of my daze.
Who was this girl? ‏I took one look at Lena, and immediately looked away, worried I might burst into desperate laughter if I looked again at her disgusted expression.
"And who are you?" Maria smiled, holding out her hand to Lena.
"Err... I'm Lena Willows."She said, biting her lip, smiling in an overly false way. It was obvious she thought she would burst out laughing if she wasn't careful.
"I have a feeling we're going to be good friends, Lena Willows. You are a Christian too, I can feel it. Or is it you, Asha Karthi?"
"Well..." Lena said, as Maria looked at her, obviously expecting her to deny or confirm something. "I'm not sure... well, does our religion matter right now? I mean, witchcraft is against Christianity anyway, so..."
Maria bowed her head graciously.
"Well, we all must have our opinions... I, for one, believe that what is sacred is this, the witchcraft the Lord feels is unworthy, is the type that... the Satanists, the ones who drink the blood of-"
"But technically we drink blood too, right? When people say that the wine is blood. Yep, that's why some people used to call Christians cannibals." Lena butted in. Somehow, Maria kept smiling. She turned to me.
"My friend, we shall meet again. You would be a good Christian, Asha Karthi. I can feel it. Well... better than some people." Maria added disapprovingly, as Lena suddenly had a coughing fit. "I shall hopefully see you both soon." Maria curtsied to us, before gliding- literally, gliding- away.
