CHAPTER 16
Pippa shifted nervously under all the pressure. "Hi...um... I'm Pippa, and erm...I'm Muggle-born so I don't really know the ropes very well yet..."
I smiled encouragingly at her. I've suddenly found myself feeling really sympathetic towards all Muggle-borns recently, though I haven't actually said that because I would get murdered by Lena and Rose, who would tell me all the 'it doesn't matter' stuff again.
"My dad's a software developer and-"
"A what now?" Felix interrupted.
"It's like someone who makes spells only they go on computers and Muggles use them..." Lena explained slowly "I hope you understand that, I didn't really and I don't even think that's right, but whatever! Now close your mouth before you swallow a fly and stop interrupting, it's rude!"
Felix immediately shut his mouth and glared at Lena, before turning back to Pippa and smiling for her to continue.
"I'm not sure what else to say ...I know a Slytherin girl called Magnolia...we went to the same school... but she's really nice and everyone was telling me the Slytherins aren't nice..."She looked around unsure what else to say, looking a bit uncomfortable. I exchanged looks with Lena at that last comment, which thankfully went unnoticed by Pippa.
"Thanks Pippa. How about you go next, Rose." Albus said kindly.
Everyone turned to Rose and she went on to introduce herself- or rather her parents and then herself! When the attention moved to me I muttered something similar to what I'd said on the first night in the Gryffindor dormitory to the other girls. I don't know why I get so embarrassed, I used to be quite a loud person...but I suppose years of not talking to people and trying to remain invisible has come back to haunt me!
Gradually we got round the circle, everyone explaining their background to the group. I got to know the Gryffindor boys a bit better. There was Felix who grew up near George Weasley ( some brother of Ron) and that's how he knew the Potter's and Weasleys so well. Albus obviously, was a son of Harry Potter, and basically everyone knew him through his father.
There was also Noah and Jonah. They were both quite quiet and a bit shy. Then Noah filled in for Alli and Jay, who were the ones who left earlier to go look for Professor Steedy. Quite a while ago. And still hadn't returned.
We'd gotten round to a Hufflepuff girl, called Lizzie Lott, Muggle-born and quite loud, when the door burst open.
Ali and Jay walked in smirking, followed by a rather distressed looking teacher I recognised from the Sorting.
She walked in to the classroom, half walking, half running, with her cloak on sideways and her hat lopsided.
"Dear Lord! Students! I am... so sorry!..." She spoke between pants for breath, conforming my suspicions that she'd just run all the way from wherever she had been. " I arrived late last night.... and I went to the staffroom...for a drink...fell...fell...asleep...so sorry!"
I heard a slight cough besides me, and turned to see Lena holding back giggles.
"What?" I whispered, while Professor Steedy was busy putting her things on her desk.
"First, she didn't arrive that late last night- same as us! And second, what was she having a drink of?" She managed to get out between giggles. I felt my mouth turn up and that, perhaps it was just the attitude of this teacher and imagining her drunk, but we were stopped by a glare from Rose.
"Honestly, you two are so immature!" Rose seemed to be aiming to tell us off, but Lena shrugged, and inclined her head towards the clock. I turned around to see that we had ten minutes left of the lesson.
Professor Steedy glanced at the clock as well.
"Oh dear! Only ten minutes! What on earth shall we do?"
In actual fact, we spent the rest of the lesson going round the class (again!) and sharing any knowledge of magical History that we knew. Thankfully we never got to me so I never had to explain anything...or explaining that I didn't have anything to explain.
If that made sense.
Rose and Albus however, knew quite a lot about the 'Great Battle of Hogwarts' to Professor Steedy's delight, and Lena's parents had told her a lot about Magical History too.
When the bell rang, it came as a shock; we'd been quite wrapped up in our discussions.
"I'm going to wait in here, girls, so I don't miss the next class! I'm going to dismiss you row by row, okay?"
"Yes Professor." We all chorused dutifully, but the look on Lena's disgruntled face almost set me off into giggles. Almost. I haven't quite got to that stage yet.
"Good! And would... the back row like to lead off please..."
When we'd all finally been dismissed, we turned to Pippa, who looked slightly startled.
"Where are the greenhouses? We have Herbology next." I asked, remembering what she'd said about getting lost.
"It's not even that hard," she grinned, "just go to the entrance hall, go out the doors on the side corridor and walk down til you get to the greenhouses. Sorry, but I think I should go and clean up a bit before Transfiguration- we have that next." With a merry wave, she skipped off.
"Do you want to just go and find Herbology now? I mean, break's only 20 minutes and we haven't found anything yet." Rose suggested, to which we all agreed.
We started down the corridor, Rose, Lena and I, when we heard a voice call out behind us.
"Oi! Lena! Asha! Guys wait up!"
I turned round to see Electra and Alyssa rushing up behind us.
"Are you guys heading towards Herbology?" Alyssa asked panting a little.
"Yeah. Wanna come?"
They nodded so we continued down the corridor. All the corridors in Hogwarts were massive. Like seriously?! You could fit a whole house here...!
Bearing that in mind, imagine my surprise when someone barged roughly into my shoulder, causing me to trip and fall.
"Oh Merlin! Asha are you okay?" Lena asked, holding her hand out to help me up.
"Yeah I'm fine..." I mumbled, embarrassed to have tripped over in front of everyone.
"It was one of those stupid Slytherins!" Rose huffed looking down the corridor. "You have no idea what I'd do to get them into trouble!" She hissed.
"The whole lot of them are idiots! One of the 6th years was standing in the corridor and tripping all the first years up with some invisible rope thing! I was so annoyed I told him where to stick his-"
"Okay! Okay! We get the idea!" Alyssa quickly cut her off before she got...err...carried away...
We reached the entrance like Pippa told us. Rose stepped forward and opened the door and we all followed through. I sucked in a deep breath of fresh air as I glanced over the Hogwarts scenery. It was actually quite beautiful...and that means a lot coming from me, cause I never really get the big deal with scenery...
But there were green fields all the way to the edge where a dark black expanse of trees filled in to the boarder of the grounds. Hagrid's hut sat further down, with a gentle column of smoke rose from his chimney.
We all filed into the pebbled path which snaked round the perimeter of the building.
"I can't believe they just get away with it as well!" Lena huffed, pulling me out of my daydreaming. "I mean McGonagall would never let Gryffindors get away with the stuff they do!"
"Hang on...who even is the head of Slytherin?" I asked.
I mean, I know Professor McGonagall's head of Gryffindor and Professor Flitwick is head of Ravenclaw. He told me the day he came to my house...I think one of the new teachers was head of Hufflepuff, but I wasn't sure about Slytherin..
"Oh it's that new idiot! You know the one who's temporarily taken over Astronomy? The one who half the girls have a stupid crush on...just because he's some Quidditch star as well! Honestly, people these days!"
I nodded sympathetically towards Lena, but shared a smirk with Rose. Lena spent some time this morning telling half the common room off for 'crushing on that idiot' as she put it. It was actually quite funny...
"But yeah...he doesn't give a beep what any of the Slytherins d-wait why are you laughing?"
I turned to see Electra in fits of laughter. Like she was literally clutching her sides...
"You! You said 'beep'! Like you didn't swear! Ha ha ha..." (It went on like that for some time..)
"Well no I don't like to swear! Don't judge my life choices! And really, for the situation, damn doesn't seem appropriate, it's too mild... But those Slytherins...I swear none of them should come near me right now, cause I could punch one!"
"Err, Lena..." I start.
"What?" She turned to look at me.
"That's gonna be kinda hard..."
I point over to the Greenhouses, where the unmistakable figure of Gertrude Close stood outside our next classroom. ( I would say Greenhouse, but it kinda ruins the dramatic ending...
