Nai stood near the entrance, watching as Sailom and Aum re-entered the party, their hands still linked. The warm golden lights of the venue reflected off the polished floors, the elegant décor enhancing the grandeur of the event.
Sailom, still holding onto Aum's hand, was practically glowing, his smile so wide it looked like it would split his face in two.
Aum, on the other hand, looked calm—too calm. As if walking into a room full of people while holding Sailom's hand meant nothing to him.
Nai's brows furrowed as he watched them approach. The moment Aum reached him, Sailom slipped away to his mother's side, leaving Aum to face Nai.
Unable to hold back his curiosity, Nai leaned in slightly and asked, "What's with that smile on his face? Don't tell me..." He paused, eyes narrowing. "Did you agree to be his boyfriend or something?"
Aum, still wearing his usual unreadable expression, nodded. "Yeah."
For a moment, Nai thought he had misheard. His mouth fell open. "What?!"
Aum simply glanced at him, his lips quirking in amusement. "I will explain later."
Nai blinked. His brain felt like it had short-circuited. He wanted answers now, but before he could press further, the sound of a microphone crackling to life filled the room.
Aum turned toward the stage. "The cake-cutting is about to start."
Nai clenched his jaw, knowing he wouldn't be getting an explanation anytime soon. He exhaled sharply and nodded, though his heart remained unsettled.
The party's attention shifted as a strikingly beautiful man took center stage.
Dressed in an ivory suit with gold embroidery along the lapels, Rome, the MC for the night, exuded charm and charisma. His silky black hair was perfectly styled, and his dazzling smile was enough to command the entire room's focus.
With practiced ease, Rome raised the microphone and beamed at the guests. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome once again to this grand celebration! It is my honor to stand before you tonight, on behalf of our wonderful host, to welcome you all to this spectacular evening."
The crowd erupted in applause, the energy in the room lifting instantly.
Rome's voice was smooth and expressive, effortlessly drawing everyone in. "But of course, tonight isn't just about music, drinks, and good company. No, no. Tonight, we are here to celebrate the most beautiful woman in the room—our beloved birthday girl, the one and only Khun Sainam!"
A spotlight shone on the woman of the night, and the crowd cheered as Sainam gracefully stepped forward.
Sainam was the epitome of elegance. She wore a stunning sapphire-blue evening gown that cascaded in soft waves to the floor, hugging her figure in just the right way.
The bodice was adorned with delicate silver embroidery, shimmering under the chandelier's glow. Her dark brown hair was styled into soft curls, framing her radiant face, and a pair of diamond earrings dangled from her ears, adding to her refined beauty.
Jui had given it his all while styling Sainam. She was a huge client and was a close friend of Nai's mother-in-law, Jui didn't want to take chances.
He styled her in such a way that no one else could even dream of outshining her for the night.
Sainam herself was pretty pleased with her outfit and styling. Her eyes sparkled with joy as she smiled at the guests, exuding warmth and grace.
Rome placed a hand over his heart and sighed dramatically. "Look at her! Absolutely stunning!"
The crowd chuckled as Sainam playfully waved a hand at him. "You are too much, N' Rome."
"Not at all, khun nooy!" Rome winked. "I only speak the truth. If beauty had a name tonight, it would be yours."
Sainam laughed, shaking her head. "Alright, alright, that's enough flattery for now."
Rome grinned before gesturing toward the center of the hall. "Now, everyone, it's time for the moment we have all been waiting for. Let's bring out the cake!"
On cue, a massive three-tiered cake was wheeled into the center of the room. The cake was breathtaking—decorated in white and gold, adorned with delicate sugar flowers, and topped with an elegant gold topper that read Happy Birthday, Sainam!
The crowd burst into a cheerful rendition of the birthday song as Sainam stood before the cake, her hands clasped together, her eyes glistening with happiness.
As the song ended, she took the silver knife and, with a joyous smile, made the first cut.
The first slice went to her husband, Saifar.
The moment she held out the fork, Saifar leaned forward, taking the bite straight from her hand. His eyes twinkled with mischief as he quickly took another piece and fed her in return.
The crowd cooed in delight.
Saifar wiped a bit of frosting from the corner of her lips with his thumb, his touch lingering. "Happy birthday, my love," he murmured, his voice filled with devotion.
Sainam smiled softly, pressing a kiss to his cheek. "Thank you, my heart."
The room erupted in cheers and applause.
Then came her three sons.
First was Saifah, the eldest. He approached his mother with his usual composed demeanor, but his love for her was undeniable. He took a piece of cake and carefully fed it to her, his expression gentle. "Happy birthday, Mae. Thank you for everything."
Sainam cupped his face, looking up at her eldest son with pride. "I should be the one thanking you for being such a wonderful son." She pulled him down for a warm hug, kissing his forehead.
Next was Sailub, the youngest. Unlike his older brother, Sailub was playful and cheeky. "Mae, let's make this more fun," he said, grinning as he swiped a tiny bit of frosting onto her nose before feeding her the cake.
Sainam gasped, laughing. "You little troublemaker!"
Sailub laughed as well, leaning in to kiss her cheek. "Happy birthday, Mae! Love you tons!"
Finally, it was Sailom's turn.
Unlike his brothers, Sailom hesitated for a moment, his expression unusually soft. He picked up a piece of cake and held it up to her lips, his fingers trembling slightly.
Sainam noticed instantly. "What's wrong, my love?" she asked gently.
Sailom smiled but there was something unspoken in his eyes. He shook his head. "Nothing." He fed her the cake, then pulled her into a tight hug.
Sainam felt the way his grip lingered, the way he buried his face against her shoulder for just a moment longer than necessary.
She smiled, rubbing his back. "Thank you, my son."
"I love you, Mae," he murmured softly, just for her to hear.
"I love you more," she whispered back.
The warmth in the air was undeniable. It was a scene filled with love, affection, and gratitude—a testament to the bond this family shared.
Nai, standing beside Zo, watched everything unfold. He couldn't deny that the moment was touching. But even as he admired the warmth of the celebration, his mind kept drifting back to what Aum had said earlier.
Sailom's smile. Aum's agreement.
Something was off.
And Nai was determined to get to the bottom of it.
