Aum crushed the empty beer can lightly in his hand before placing it on the table with a soft clink. The dining table was cluttered with takeout containers, half-eaten food, and several cans of beer scattered around. The atmosphere in Sak's small condo had relaxed since dinner started, but there was still an unspoken tension lingering in the air.
Aum leaned back in his chair and looked straight at Nai. "So," he said, raising a brow, "are you going to make the announcement or not?"
Across the table, Nai paused mid-bite. Jui and Sak also looked up from their food. They had all been waiting for this.
Nai slowly reached for the beer can in front of him. Instead of answering, he tilted his head back and took a long drink. The can emptied much faster than usual. When he finally lowered it, the aluminum was completely drained.
He placed it down on the table with a quiet thud. His expression was unusually grave.
Jui noticed immediately. His brows knit together with concern. "Is something wrong?"
Nai shook his head slightly. "No. Nothing is wrong." He took a slow breath. "I resigned from my job."
For a moment, the room went completely silent.
Then all three of them shouted at the same time. "WHAT?!"
Sak nearly knocked over his chair as he leaned forward. "Why would you do that, Hia?" His forehead creased with confusion. "Didn't you say you wanted to work one more year before starting your own agency?"
Sak knew Nai had been planning this for a long time. Nai wanted to build his own firm eventually, but he had always said he wanted at least another year to build more connections and experience before leaving the company.
The sudden resignation didn't make sense.
Aum frowned deeply. "Did something happen? Was this because of that b*tch Fai?"
At the mention of the name, Sak and Jui both looked toward Nai again.
Fai was infamous in Nai's workplace. She was talented, yes—but equally notorious for taking credit for other people's work. She maintained suspiciously close relationships with several senior executives and even some of the company's clients.
Nai stayed silent.
That silence alone was enough to confirm their suspicions.
Jui's worry deepened. "What about the major event you were in charge of?"
Nai let out a shaky breath. "The higher-ups transferred it to Fai."
Aum's hand slammed onto the table. "That's it," he snapped. "We need to teach her a lesson."
Nai rubbed his forehead. "Calm down."
"How am I supposed to calm down?" Aum shot back. "How many times has she stolen your projects already?"
His voice grew louder with every sentence. "You work day and night like a donkey, and she swoops in and collects all the praise and credit."
Nai raised a hand in a quiet attempt to stop him. "This time there is more to it."
That was enough to silence the table.
Jui leaned forward anxiously. "What do you mean?"
Nai hesitated. He looked at the three people sitting around him—the only people he trusted enough to say this out loud. "There have been rumors," he said slowly. "In the company."
"What kind of rumors?" Jui asked immediately.
Nai gave a dry laugh. "The kind that started after I married Zo."
