Chapter Sixty-Nine: Absolutely No Being Sappy

We were all parked a few yards away from Austin's dad's mansion. It was almost 4 30am now, our flight was at 9, and we had to hurry.

Vanessa, quick as ever, got to work. "Okay guys, as you know, the whole mission's gonna take about an hour-"

"I thought you said half an hour!" Eliot shrieked. "My dad's crazy about airport punctuality, he get panic attacks about them!"

I shrug. "He's got a point. Uncle Greg told you guys to be there in 6am."

Vanessa sighed. "Guys we're rescuing our best friend. I mean not that we didn't do it before but seriously, everything will go well I promise. Right Sam? Jayden? And it's not like we'll make round trip again, Sam and Mia and my suitcases are already in the truck bed."

Sam nodded. "Well yeah Evelyn to be honest. We kind of did it a few times."

Vanessa agreed. "I promise we'll be there by 6."

She quickly prompted us with the plan one more time. We were all in dark clothes for convenience.

She clapped. "Alright let's go."

We all got off. Except, I thought we were going to take the straight way to the front of the mansion but Mia yanked me away, whispering.

"Are you crazy? We're not taking the front door."

I whispered back, a bit annoyed. "Well I guess Van forgot that part."

Vanessa, in her black wig, grinned. "Sorry."

We all jumped over the neatly cut bush and all six of us made a run for it from the back so there was no one watching the yard from the window. We reached the back of the house which was as luxurious as the front part and stopped to catch our breath.

Eliot spoke. "I guess now we call him to get down?"

"We do," Vanessa agreed. "But this bitch packs like a bulldog for trips. I know for a fact that he had packed over two suitcases and we'll need two of us to get them."

She sighed. "If it was other times I would've kicked him in the balls and told him to pick one bag but he was so excited last night I can't do it."

Sam nodded. "And like Vanessa said, it's pretty impossible to get them down through the window so we'll have to take the inside stairs and that's more dangerous than stepping on a dog tail."

Jayden whispered in my ear, explaining. "His dad has employees working inside the house so it's pretty crowded."

His warm breath sent a shiver down my spine and thighs. I spoke, surprised. "Oh his dad's THAT kinda rich?"

"He's THAT kinda rich."

"What does he even do?"

He grimaced. "Lawyer."

I nodded, "Why does he need lawyers at 4 am in his house?"

Jayden shrugged. "I mean I don't really pry much about Austin's business but as far as I can remember this one's about a pretty hardass criminal."

He grinned although a bit forced. "You gotta be scared of this man."

I tried to imagine Austin poring over files and trying to prove his client innocent. I couldn't. I felt so bad for him though. I know he drunk around and tried to piss his dad off but I saw his skills the time I came to this very place at the Halloween.

He was magnificent at painting.

Why didn't his dad let him do that?

I didn't speak much. Jayden and I were still awkward around each other.
