I look at myself in the mirror. The girl staring back at me is nothing of beauty or importance. My wavy, brown hair reaches half way down my back. My eyes are a boring hazel and my nose is slightly crooked. My body is nothing to look at. Its just standard. At the age of 17 I stand at a height of 5'2. My body is clad with old ripped jeans and a baggy, black t-shirt.
I sigh and take a step back from the mirror to take a look around my small room.
The walls are a dirty off white from years of wear and tear. The floor is made of untreated wooden boards that squeak as you walk on them. My bed is nothing but a mattress that lays on the floor, with two lumpy pillows and a blanket. It's definitely not the most comfortable thing to sleep on. Right beside my bed is a old wooden nightstand. It's definitely seen better years. The dresser that sits in the far corner of my room is not any better though. One of the saddest things in my room is the closet. You can barely fit a few shirts in it, let alone stand in the thing.
The rest of our house is in about the same condition as my room. You may be wondering why we live like this. The simple answer is because we have to. Since my dad left years ago my mother has had to raise both me and my little sister, Rose.
Even though my mom was devastated when my dad abandoned us, she worked through it. She works three jobs just to make ends meet. She doesn't complain about having to work so much and she is actually a very happy person. As soon as I can I'm getting a job to help her out. It's just no one is hiring right now.
"Honey, I'm headed to work! Make sure you and your sister get to school on time!" my mother screams to me from down the hall.
I always make sure that Rose and I are at school when we need to be so there is really no need for my mother to remind me, but it's our routine.
"Okay! Love you!" I scream back.
"Bye! Love you too!" she says before I hear the front door close behind her.
Before heading out of my room I grab my book bag, the same one I have been using for three years. Others would complain but I don't mind it one bit. It serves it's purpose of holding my school supplies and that's all I really need.
Rose's room is probably the most welcoming in our house. Even though we don't have that much money, we try to spoil Rose and give her a child hood that she deserves. Her walls are painted a beautiful sky blue and her bed is a lot more comfortable than mine. We even got the money to buy her a stuffed animal and a few other toys to play with.
When I walk in her room I see that she is already dressed and ready to go. I smile at her and she runs over to me with a big smile on her face. It's her first year in school and she loves it. Every morning she gets up really early and gets ready as fast as she can.
"Sissy, can we go now?" she asks smiling up at me happily.
"Yes we can munchkin." I say with a laugh and grab her hand.
On our way out the door I make sure that my keys are in my pocket so that we can get back in the house. Lord knows what happened when I forgot them one day and Rose and I were locked outside until mom finally got home several hours later.
