I watch as my sister unlocks the cells, one by one. "Are you telling the truth?" I ask her. She blinks at me. "I'd rather lose my loveless father, than my brother who has stuck by my side for years." She says truthfully. Esme pushes the bar-door open and hugs Theo. Hae glares at her but then hugs her anyway. Esme might have said those things in anger and in pain, but we both knew it was true. If I didn't bring her here she would've been okay. Ainsley would have been alive. And I would stillbe on my family's side.
I slowly walk out of the cell and meet my sister's gaze, she knows what I'm thinking... she always knows. "It's my fault. Not yours." She whispers when she moves closer to me. "I can't give you all the credit." I mumble. "Give me credit for all the bad things. If you give me the credit then you won't feel so..." She stops to think of a word. "Crappy." I say under my breathe. "Or I could just punch the hell out of her." She motions to Esme. "Hurt her and I'll-" She pats my shoulder. "Relax. I was kidding." She says, flashing a teasing smile and walks to the stairs to the deck.
"Damiao." A soft voice calls. I look at those breathetaking blue eyes. She walks up to me and take both my hands in hers. "I am sorry for what I said. I didn't mean it. I really don't think that of you. And I don't blame you one bit " She says truthfully. I search her face. "I do forgive you... but what you said was true." I say sadly, and exhale slowly. "You're not him. You're far from being your father." She whispers. My crew move passed us towards the stairs to the docks, leaving us alone.
I cleared my throat. "We... we should head out." I say not meeting her eyes. She squezes my hands. "Please. I wish I never said that. Please I can't lose you two." She begs her voice cracking. "You won't. But we have to go to the decks now. We'll talk after the war." I say removing my hands out of hers and leave for the deck.
I stand with my sister on the helmman deck as her ship moves behind our father's. Esme is studying his ship from the main deck. I know we should have talked it through, but I couldn't. Anger might make you say things you'll regret, but just like being drunk you say the truth. Unfortunetly the naked truth only ever comes out those two ways.
We planned that we'll wait until both ships anchored and the crew is off the ship. For a suprise attack, and Esme spoke with Delja to warn the towns people. And asked them for help. Watching the two speak with tears in their eyes was heartrenching. Delja said that Ainsley's body fell into a place that she couln't access. Even though she could feel there was water, there was something blockig her powers to get to him. And that broke Esme even more.
As night fell, Esme kept to herself in a corner, rejecting any conversation with anyone. Including me.
So I stayed with my sister. "What made you change your mind?" Maria asks. Her brown curls shine in the lantern light. "I don't know. She showed me that there was more to life than gold and power. And she showed how to be a better person. I guess. She gave me hope, the same hope mama gave us... she brought it back to me." I answer quietly. "I wonder what she would make of us now." Maria says looking up at the stars. I do the same. "I don't blame her for jumping. I know. Father would have killed her any second." She says still watching the stars. "Would you hate her if she was still alive but didn't come for us?" I prompt. She scoffs with a smile, she looks at me again. "I would just run to her and hug her until my bones ache. Atleast I would have her at my wedding." She says, but then flushes as she realized what she just admitted. I smirk. "So when is the wedding then?" I tease. "Shut it or I'll kick you until you can't walk." She threatens. I chuckle. "So you're finally in the same boat I'm in." I say with a sigh of satisfaction. She rolls her eyes. "Blasted bloody stupid boat." She mumbles.
Then she's quiet, she looks at Esme, then back at me. "Could I speak with her?" She asks me. "I've tried, she won't speak with anyone." I answer. "Well, I haven't tried yet." She says, then jumpsof the railing she and I were sitting on and walks to Esme.
I watch as Maria starts to speak, I watch as Esme rejects but Maria stays. I watch as she let's Maria in, of all people. My sister sure does have her magic.
