Music was absolutely everything to Sehyuk. He felt like it was a physical part of him, something that was connected to him. Ever since he was a child he loved to make music, from singing with his mom in the kitchen, to picking up his first guitar.
He played the instrument so effortlessly it was like he was born with the guitar in his hands, like his first language was music, like it lived deep in his soul.
He felt overjoyed everytime his fingers grazed the strings. He knew he wanted to be a musician.
Though there was a time when he thought he'd have to give it all up. When he was thirteen, the day when his entire life changed.
He was just playing, just like all the other kids, climbing trees, seeing who could get the highest. He had no idea that the branch under his feet would snap, sending him 25 feet to the ground below, nothing but the earth to break his fall.
All he remembers is falling, his friends screaming, and then nothing.
Flashes of sterile white walls, faint beeping, big scary machines he was put into.
And when he finally woke up, the look of despair on his mother's face and the paralyzing realization that he couldn't hear anything.
That fall left him completely deaf.
To say Sehyuk was devastated was an understatement.
If he was deaf, how could he play music? How could he listen to his guitar?
The world seemed to end.
Finally, after months of terrifying silence, his mother told him he was getting hearing aids. They wouldn't make his hearing perfect, but they would allow him to hear, and that's all he cared about.
All hope wasn't lost. He could still be a musician, as long as he could hear his guitar, he could achieve his dream.
And he did.
He debuted at 23 with people he loved like family.
The members knew Sehyuk was deaf, it was something he explained early on in their development. And though it's unorthodox for a deaf person to make music, the members gave him nothing but support when he told them.
His life was going as well as he could hope for, despite his hearing loss, he got to create music and play for crowds of people, got to make music videos, and have fan-meets, and do lives just like all the other idols.
It was an absolute dream.
Until it wasn't.
Sehyuk had special in-ears made for him so that he could still wear his hearing aids and the in-ear at the same time. He could adjust the level of sound so it didn't overwhelm the aids.
During one of their concerts, it had started to rain during On Air. it was fun at first, Taegyu bounced around the mic stand, letting the raindrops hit his face as he sang, Ganghyun laughed as water bounced off his drums, his long hair sticking to his face, Sunghyun did a dramatic slide on his knees during his base solo, his jeans getting soaked.
It was nothing but joy. The four of them getting to play on stage, carried by the cheering of the crowd.
Sehyuk was strumming the strings effortlessly, his fingers gliding across the instrument, his milk tea hair dripping onto his face. He smiled as he played but suddenly, everything went south.
Like a flash of lightning, there was a spark from Sehyuk's in-ear which sent an electric shock through his ear.
He jumped, shouting in pain as he ripped the device out of his ear.
