TRIGGER WARNING: Anxiety, swearing, yelling
Myung Jaehyun was as cheerful as can be. He was always smiling, always joking, laughing with his members. He kept the group together, the glue that kept BOYNEXTDOOR from crumbling apart.
He was always focused on his members, always putting them before himself. When Leehan was overwhelmed, when they were away from his safe space, from his aquarium, Jaehyun was who he turned to. Jaehyun could keep him distracted, could keep him grounded when he needed it.
When woonhak was struggling with choreography, Jaehyun was the one to stay back and teach him, to encourage the maknae and lift him up when he was down.
When riwoo got frustrated, when he couldn't calm himself down, Jaehyun put his hands on his shoulders, he'd calm him back down, he'd cool him off.
When sungho's throat was sore from singing, jaehyun made him tea, jaehyun brought throat lozenges with him to their schedules. Jaehyun had water ready for the vocalist as soon as he stepped out of the recording booth.
It was all jaehyun.
Jaehyun lead their group. Jaehyun led the boys so that they could be a successful group. So that their dreams could be achieved.
But why was it his responsibility?
Why was Myung Jaehyun the leader? Why were all the expectations on him?
Jaehyun wanted nothing more than to be an idol. He'd dreamed of being a performer since he was little, dreaming of the day he'd stand on his own stage, and be greeted by screaming fans.
But the debut was much harder than he expected. It was turmoil, trying to prove yourself worthy of being an idol. It was endless days of grueling work. Dance practice, vocal practice, meetings, photoshoots, MV shoots, variety shows, social media content. It was so much.
Everything he did was monitored. He had to watch what he said, what he wore, what he ate, he was expected to be flawless. To lead five boys to victory.
He couldn't let anyone down. His stomach churned at the thought of failing, of failing his members, his family, and most of all, himself.
So despite the crushing pressure, and despite the weight that was constantly on his shoulders, and despite the exhaustion, myung jaehyun smiled.
He always smiled.
He never let himself slip up. He never told his members when his body was on the verge of collapse, he never told them how nauseous he felt before a concert, he never told them how much he wanted to fall apart, the pressure of success crushing him like a boulder.
He just smiled.
He endured it for years. He buried the pain, he swallowed the fear until he couldn't anymore.
BOYNEXTDOOR were working on their comeback, a full length album, and a world tour in the works.
Jaehyun had been juggling his leader duties, his practice, and his position as an MC all at once. He barely had a second to breathe.
The release was approaching fast and eyes were on jaehyun to make it go smoothly. He was the first one awake to make sure all the boys got up on time, he led every practice, trying to help them understand the moves thoroughly. He never missed a beat, he was never late, he was never tired.
Until one day when he got held up at the studio, being thrown into another show to MC without having a second to protest.
He texted sungho to let him know, his stomach in his throat as he did.
