CHAPTER TWO~ TIMEKEEPER

‘Now.’

Being able to communicate through telepathy makes our job a whole lot easier.

I give him the cue and he strolls into the library. Disguised as what teenage girls call ‘hot’ these days, blind fools, he walks right up to our redheaded subject. She looks up from her book in surprise. So surprised, in fact, that she fails to see the blonde boy that crosses her path of vision. Subject Number Two holds onto his sagging pants, grabs his sister, and they walk out of the library. Good.

‘Clear.’

The Interceptor winks at Subject Number One and casually walks into the bathroom. From there, he teleports.

Right into The Center. The place we lived in is shaped like a plus sign. There are four of us Spirits, and we each dominate in our own wing. The Center is where we meet to discuss our assignments. From their rooms come Matetracker and Conscience#3, the other two Spirits.

They gather around me, Interceptor casually, Matetracker expectant, Conscience#3 eager.

“So what’s gonna happen to Aubrey and Ayden?” Conscience#3 asks of our two subjects.

I pull a three dimensional screen of out thin air, clicking on a file labeled with their names.

“In five years, Blondie will man up, after learning how to use a belt correctly. They’ll meet in the library again,” I inform everyone will updating the file status to ‘Interception’.

Conscience#3 squeals.

“I can’t wait!” she says excitedly. “I’m pretty sure he has a romantic side somewhere.”

“You think that for everyone,” I remind her.

She shrugs. “Well, most don’t disappoint.”

“Don’t go into his mind until it’s time,” Matetracker warns her. “It took me forever to find these two. Thank goodness they were in the same location.”

She turns towards me and asks, “Do they need to stay where they are?”

I close my eyes. After a few seconds, I open them and say,

“Redhead does. She’s going to get into some good colleges, but she needs to stay around.”

No one asks me why; we’ve gone through the same procedures so much that they’ve come to realize that eventually, they’ll understand why.

Matetracker, Interceptor, Conscience#3, and I, we’re not normal. We are not even human. We are four of the many Spirits out there, and like all of them, we have a specific job. Our job is to find soul mates and bring them together. What sounds like an easy task is actually very complex. Most of the time, the soul mates we find are still infants, and we must trace out their paths so that eventually, they’ll meet again.

Being soul mates does not mean that you will find each other no matter what. No, it simply means that when you do find each other, you’ll fall in love instantly and live the rest of your lives together. Your soul mate is your other half, and once you find that person, living life without them will seem like an empty void of promises. And your soul will be in constant agony.

This is why our job is so important. We go out of our way to map out the future and make sure that somehow, soul mates always end up together. Time is set up based on the domino effect. If one thing isn’t right, the consequences will not look so good either. Every single detail has to be put in place right.
