I was shivering.

I stared down at the gun.

Still in my hand.
Still hot.
Still screaming louder than my breath ever could.

How… how could I?
How could I fucking do that?

I shot him.

I shot Anirudh.

My eyes widened—
met his body.
Limp. Slumped. Red.

His white shawl was soaked.
Soaked in blood.

And I couldn’t even move.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Nahi… nahi nahi nahi—”

The words stumbled out of my mouth like broken glass.

And then—

I pinched the heavy folds of my lehenga and ran.
Ran so fast I barely felt the ground.

The air stabbed at my lungs as I collapsed beside him—my knees scraping hard into the sand.

The bullet—
“Oh God no no no no no…”
“Near your chest—Rudh… Rudh no—”

He was still breathing. Barely.

And that smile.
That fucking smile still on his lips like he wasn’t bleeding to death.

His half-lidded eyes met mine as he whispered:

“A—agar aaj hum mafia hai… gangster hai… qaatil hai bhi… jaan…”
“…toh sirf tumhe bachane ke liye.”

(If I’m a mafia, a killer, a monster today, jaan… it was all to protect you.)

My whole body was shaking.

Tears fell like rain as I cupped his cheeks in my hands, voice cracking like glass.

“Rudh, bas… bas chhup ho jaiye… breath… just fucking breathe!”

“Please—don’t do this to me…”

He groaned softly—
smiling again, lips cracked.

“Waise nishana toh aapka bada teekha hai…”

“Gold medal laa sakti thi aap... seedha dil pe maari.”

(Your aim is deadly, you know... You could win gold. You hit straight to the heart.)

“Shut up!” I cried, my hands stained in his blood.
“This is not the time for your stupid jokes!”

But he wasn’t done.

“Aapke haathon se… marna bhi toh… kismat ki baat hai…”

(Dying by your hands… maybe that’s the only fate I ever deserved…)
