The morning air in Mewar Palace was cool and perfumed with jasmine. The palace maids had just finished watering the gardens, and the sandstone paths glistened faintly under the sun.
Rani Aaryavika walked through the courtyard quietly, her steps bare against the damp earth.
At the far end, Rana Rudradev entered through the corridor, his training finished. His sword rested at his side, his robes changed, his posture still carrying the weight of command. The faint sheen of exertion clung to him, not vanity, but vitality.
He stopped when he saw her.
She had just come from her bath, her hair still damp, dark strands clinging to her neck and shoulders, her face free of jewels or paint. The ivory silk of her robe caught the light as she moved, simple but impossibly graceful.
She had always been beautiful but now, unadorned, unguarded; there was something disarming about her. A kind of purity that had nothing to do with appearance and everything to do with being utterly herself.
He stood there in a trance, taking in the raw appearance of his wife. For the first time he saw her, behind the silk adorned veils of her dupatta or any heavy ornaments that adorned her.
Aaryavika turned at the sound of his footsteps, startled at first, then composed. Their eyes met across the space between pillars, hers calm, luminous; his steady, intent.
He was just in his cotton loin, his chest bare. Aaryavika couldn't help but take a deep look at her husband.
His chest was rippled with muscles, dark tan skin covering them; a bit dusty, a bit scratched. Perfect, nevertheless. There were several small scars littered over this body, at the parts that met her eyes but one scar in particular drew her attention the most.
It was a small one, on the left side of his chest, just above where the heart is believed to be; if he in fact did possess one. It looked old, healed but significant nonetheless.
Her eyes traveled up towards the owner of it, getting caught in the intensity with which the king was adoring his wife.
For a moment, neither bowed nor spoke.
"Humne raniyon ko malmal aur sona odhe dekha hai kintu kabhi kisine subha itni khoob nahi odhi." Rudradev quietly said, breaking the prolonged silence.
I've seen queens draped in silk and gold. But none who wore the morning so well.
"Aur hamne rajaon ko mukut tale dabte dekhein hai kintu kabhi kisi raja ko uske bina azaad nahi dekha." Aaryavika's lips curved, just barely; not in shyness, but acknowledgment.
And I've seen kings weighed down by crowns. But few who looked freer without one.
A beat of silence followed, not awkward, but charged. The air seemed to still between them, heavy with the unspoken.
