You sighed as you adjusted your hearing aids that made a loud ringing sound in your ears that made your head hurt. You closed your eyes, your fingers adjusting your hearing aids. This is the third time in a day that the same thing has happened. If you want to get new hearing aids, it will cost a lot. That's why you're stuck with your old hearing aids.
Also, sooner or later, you probably won't be using your hearing aids anymore. Luckily you know sign language.
Sean MacGuire your young waiter who was just serving the customers their order noticed you in the kitchen, standing with your eyes closed with hand adjusting your hearing aids. He looked at you with uncertainty plus concern.
"again, eh?" Sean said with his heavy Irish accent.
Your hearing is muffled right now due to you adjusting these hearing aids but you can still catch up with what Sean says as soon as you notice him. You nod.
"yeah, sooner or later, I might not need it" you sighed.
Sean nodded in understanding. "whay... so, I need to learn sign language, eh?"
You raise your eyebrows and shrugged. "I can only read your lips but yeah.. It's in the contract if you want to learn sign language." you smirked.
Sean grinned at your words, the smirk forming crooked on his young face. He stepped further into the kitchen, a clean apron flapping behind him like a misplaced cape.
"Well now, that's a clause I must've missed, boss," he said, wagging a finger with mock offense. "You sneak that in with the payroll terms, did you?"
You chuckled quietly, the sound faint in your ears, but the shape of it familiar in your chest. "Page three. Small print. Right between 'no flirting with customers' and 'don't burn the muffins.'"
Sean gasped dramatically. "I knew that was a rule! Dammit, and I thought Miss Daisy from table four was lookin' at me like I was a full-course meal."
You laughed again and turned back to the prep counter, adjusting the tray of freshly baked pastries. But Sean stayed where he was, leaning against the doorframe now, the humor softening in his eyes.
"So, it's really going?" he asked, quieter this time.
You hesitated, stilling your hands for a moment. Then nodded.
"Yeah. It's fading. Not all the time... but more often now. Like... like someone's slowly turning down the dial."
Sean ran a hand through his already-messy hair. "That's shit."
You smiled gently at his blunt sympathy. "It's just how it is."
He opened his mouth like he wanted to say something else, but the bell over the front door jingled. "Customers," he said, glancing over his shoulder.
You gave him a little wave of dismissal. "Go. I'm fine."
Sean turned to go but paused, then looked back over his shoulder, voice laced with something rare — earnestness.
