The score was Dutch’s idea. Of course it was.
“High-risk, high-reward,” he’d said, eyes glittering like he saw gold in every damn brick of the city. “Government payroll. Second floor, Saint Denis Banking & Trust. Clean in, clean out.”
You and Arthur had done jobs together before — easy ones, loud ones, stupid ones. But this? This was supposed to be fast. Two guards, quick hands, a few well-placed threats.
But something always goes wrong.
And tonight, it did.

The alarm went off before you’d even cracked the safe.
The guards were tougher than expected — one of them managed to pull a hidden lever behind the desk. You could still hear the bell echoing down the street.
And then came the law.
A whistle in the distance.
Then two.
Then gunshots.“Damn it!” Arthur hissed, grabbing the sack of cash. “We’re blown!”
You fired out the window, covering him while he kicked open the back door. “We need high ground!” you shouted, ducking as a bullet shattered the lamp beside your head.
Arthur nodded, tugging your hand. “Rooftops. Go!”

The streets were crawling with lawmen.
You and Arthur scrambled up a fire escape, boots slipping on rusted metal. The rooftops were narrow and steep, shingles giving way beneath your feet. You ran like your life depended on it — because it did.
The bag of cash weighed you down. You tossed it ahead to Arthur once you reached the next ledge.
Gunshots rang out below. One ricocheted off the drainpipe behind you.
You nearly slipped.
Arthur doubled back. “C’mon! Give me your hand!”
“I got it—!”
Another shot.
Your boot skidded.
The edge crumbled.
You fell forward, catching the lip of the roof by your fingertips.Arthur dropped to his knees, grabbing your wrists.
Your legs dangled four stories above the cobbled street. The alley below looked like it would swallow you whole.
“Don’t you dare let go!” he shouted, gripping you with both hands.
You looked up at him — at the sweat on his brow, the wildness in his eyes. He was holding on with everything he had, but your hands were already slipping. Blood smeared between your fingers where the edge had cut you.
“I’m—Arthur—I can’t—!”
“Yes, you can! You hear me? Look at me!”
Your arms burned.
Your shoulders screamed.
And behind him, you saw lanterns bobbing toward the roof.Lawmen. Closing in.
Arthur saw them too.
“No,” he growled, tightening his grip. “No. You ain’t leavin’ me like this.”
Tears blurred your vision. “Arthur—”
“You’re gonna pull yourself up,” he barked, voice cracking. “You have to.”
But you couldn’t.
You were shaking. Arms numb. Your body didn’t listen anymore.
And your grip—
Your grip was slipping.“I’m sorry,” you whispered.
His eyes went wide.
“No. Don’t. You hear me? Don’t say goodbye.”
“I love you.”
You smiled.
A broken little thing.And then—
Your hands slipped.
Arthur lunged—“NO!”
But he caught nothing.
Just empty air.
You fell.
You fell.
And the last thing you heard was Arthur’s voice, hoarse and raw, screaming your name into the night.

He found you in the alley.
Broken.
Still.
Blood soaking through your blouse, pooled around your head like a halo gone wrong.
He dropped to his knees beside you, hands trembling as he touched your face.
“Goddamn it… no, no, no,” he whispered, rocking you gently. “You weren’t supposed to go. Not like this.”
He held you until the sirens faded. Until Dutch and Charles found him.
They pulled him away eventually.
But Arthur never stopped hearing the sound of your hands slipping from his.
And every time he looked up at the rooftops after that, he saw you there — laughing, wild, full of fire.
Just before the fall.
