Night coiled around the borders of Idris, but it was no longer the gentle dark that blanketed the realm in rest. At the edges of the blood forest, in the deep, crawling shadows where once the cravens ruled and perished, something stirred again. Killian stood barefoot at the Rise, his bloodied arm wrapped in a torn piece of fabric, his coat blackened with soot and dried blood. The wound Alec gave him still burned not from the blade, but from the humiliation. Magnus had escaped. Not only escaped but resisted. That delicate child, who once trembled under his touch, now stood with fire behind his eyes and a king at his side.
But Killian's mouth twitched into a feral smile. "He is still mine in ways you can't unmake," he murmured to himself. A low, guttural growl sounded behind him. The beast massive, houndlike, its eyes glowing sulphur, its bones half-flesh, half-iron sniffed at the trees, restless. The cravens were forming again. And above them all, the coffin containing Zyran still wrapped in the curse of fairy vengeance pulsed faintly, as though reacting to something. The blood that Magnus spilled long ago, the fairy blood in his veins, the curse he bore from that night Killian would use it to lift Zyran's sleep. He turned to his second-in-command, a man named Kael with dark eyes and a face stitched with scars. "Send the next wave. Let them brush the outskirts not to conquer yet. Let the Idrisians taste the tension first. And summon the Seers. I need to know where the Mortal Cup lies. That's how I'll break them. That's how I will take him."
Kael gave a short bow, eyes burning. "It shall be done, my lord." As Killian stepped back into the circle of firelight, the shadows deepened around the Rise. A storm was coming. And this time, Killian would not leave without blood.
Meanwhile, back at the Palace of Idris...
King Alexander sat in the war chamber, still wearing his shirt stained from the night's confrontation. A circle of Silent Brothers stood like statues behind him, their presence a cold weight in the candlelight. At the round table, only four others sat "He got in," Alec said without emotion, though his voice was hoarse. "He touched him. I failed."
"No," Raphael said at once, voice low but resolute. "You got him out. He is alive. So is your heir. That's not failure. That's defiance." Cezar leaned forward. "But he won't stop now. He has tasted the palace. The guards sleeping spells. Every shield we placed failed last night." Simon, arms crossed, was pale. "Then we rewrite the rules. Lock down the east gates. Reinforce with daylight guards, not just shadow-trained ones. And bring the children and council elders into the stone sanctum under the chapel."
Alec nodded slowly. "And Magnus?"
"He is to be guarded at all times," Raphael said without hesitation. "By me. And by magic stronger than we have used before." Alec glanced toward the window where dawn began to stretch its gold fingers over the palace spires. He was still trembling inside. The image of Magnus, shaking, pressed to his chest, haunted him. He finally looked to the Silent Brothers. "You said there was something else. About the Mortal Cup." Brother Enoch stepped forward. His voice came not from his mouth, but directly into their minds. Killian wants the Cup not only to reverse Zyran's curse. He seeks to undo the blood-binding placed on Magnus through the wedding rite. If he spills Magnus's blood into the Cup, and offers it with his own shadow-claimed soul... he can break any sacred bond. Silence gripped the chamber. Alec stood. His hands trembled, but his voice did not. "Then we prepare for war. No more veils. No more half-measures."
He turned to the others. "Call the Shadow Riders from Ylira. Alert the king of Valentina. Raise the northern fires and the coastal bells. Magnus and our child are not prizes to be taken. They are our crown." He paused, then whispered, "And I will burn this world to the roots before I let him lay a hand on them again."
The palace walls no longer hummed with idle life; they breathed, like an animal watching from the grass, silent and bristling. Wards burned faint blue above every lintel. The air was thick with protection spells, rune smoke, and the strange scent of brewing storm. Alec moved with purpose now, as if something ancient had awakened inside him. His crown was absent. His tunic was dark, clasped at the shoulder with a silver insignia, and his sword was no longer ornamental. It lived in his grip now. But even war could not keep him from the one he loved. He opened the door to their chamber and stepped into the hush. Moonlight drifted across the room like silk, painting the floor in lines. The white curtains fluttered at the balcony doors, and beyond them,
