"After every storm that rends the world, love must learn to breathe again. Every homecoming is a rebirth, every gate crossed by the weary becomes a threshold to grace."
——
The sky above Idris was a softer blue than Calmaria had ever known.
They rode through the northern passes as the first true spring light broke across the ridges, painting the snowmelt silver. The road wound like a pale ribbon between the mountains, still scarred by war but alive again—streams ran clear where once they had run red. The men rode slow, their banners drooping in the still air. There was no need for speed. The battle was over; the dead had been named, the living bound together by something unspoken and unbreakable.
At the head of the column, Alec rode with Magnus seated before him in the saddle, wrapped in furs that smelled faintly of cedar and steel. Magnus's head rested against Alec's shoulder, his breath soft and steady, his body lighter now than it had been in weeks. His hair brushed against Alec's jaw whenever the wind shifted, and each time it did, the king's grip tightened fractionally around him as though reminding himself that he was not a dream.
The bond between them hummed quietly, a thread of warmth beneath the day's chill. After the storm and the fire, it no longer burned bright. It glowed soft, deep, endless. "Does it hurt?" Alec asked quietly, his voice nearly lost to the wind. Magnus stirred. His eyes opened, the light catching the gold flecks in them. "Only when I remember what it cost," he said, then smiled faintly. "And when you insist on galloping like a madman." Alec huffed out something close to laughter, though it was raw around the edges. "We are nearly home."
"I can feel it," Magnus murmured. His gaze drifted forward, where the mountains gave way to the rolling plains of Idris green again, dotted with the faint blush of wildflowers. "I never thought I would see it again." The king pressed a kiss into his hair, his voice low. "I swore you would." Behind them, the army followed in silence. Jace with Thane, Cezar beside him, Raphael led the healers' caravan, and even his stoic face softened as he watched his king carry his heart home.
As the afternoon wore on, they stopped near a river crossing where the old bridge had been rebuilt from the bones of war machines. Alec dismounted carefully, lifting Magnus down as if he were something sacred. He set him on the grass beside the water, crouched to meet his eyes.
Magnus bent forward to touch the water's edge. The river ran cold, clear, alive again. He smiled faintly. "Do you hear that?" Alec frowned, listening. "What?"
"The sound," Magnus whispered. "Peace." Alec's throat closed. He sat beside him, their knees touching, the world suddenly too quiet, too kind. They stayed there as the sun dipped lower, casting long shadows over the camp. Soldiers began to make fires, laughter rising in cautious bursts as if they were learning how to live again.
When Magnus finally spoke, it was barely a breath. "What happens now?"
Alec looked toward the west, where the towers of Alicante would soon rise from the mist. "We rebuild," he said. "We mend what broke." He turned to Magnus then, his hand sliding into his. "And we rest." Magnus leaned against him, his head finding the familiar curve of Alec's shoulder. "Then rest with me, my king. Just this once."
Alec smiled, eyes half-closed, his thumb tracing circles against Magnus's knuckles. "Just this once," he echoed, though both of them knew he would never stop. The river whispered, the mountains stood silent, and the first stars began to appear silver promises scattered across a kingdom reborn.
The road to Alicante wound through a landscape that seemed both strange and achingly familiar. The forests had begun to regrow, their young leaves trembling with dew, their scent sharp and green after so many months of smoke. The rivers had cleared of ash, running quick and blue under stone bridges newly mended. Every mile closer to the capital, the signs of life multiplied—fields where farmers knelt again, children running barefoot along the edges of the road, women lifting their hands in blessing as the army passed.
