"Peace is not the absence of wounds, but the courage to walk while they heal. A kingdom survives by law, but it endures by love."
——
The days that followed Magnus's first walk in the gardens arrived like slow-moving tides soft, gentle, persistent. The palace adjusted itself around him with a kind of reverence, as though the very walls remembered that they had once failed to protect him and now sought to make amends. The servants moved more quietly around the king's wing. The guards positioned themselves not with rigid vigilance but with protective softness, understanding this peace was delicate, newly born. Even the palace cats usually lazy and aloof seemed to follow Magnus from room to room, sleeping under chairs or curling near his feet as if sensing a fragile magic returning to strength.
Alec Adjusts His Crown to Make Space for His Heart
Alec split his days between statecraft and Magnus. No decree, no council meeting, no military petition was allowed to last more than an hour without the king rising and saying, "I must check on him." And no one dared object. The generals who had marched with him from Calmaria had seen what Alec became on the battlefield how his fury had burned like a living torch, how he had carried Magnus from the ruins like a sacred relic returned to the world. Even the highest-ranking counsellors now lowered their heads when the king excused himself.
He would leave the war room maps and markers scattered across the table and walk briskly down the halls until he reached the sunlit chambers where Magnus rested. Every time he pushed open the door and found Magnus sitting up, reading, or simply breathing without pain, Alec's chest would loosen. And every time he found him trembling or trapped in a nightmare, his expression would harden, as if preparing to go to war again at once.
Magnus's Healing Unfolds in Echoes and Light
His recovery was not linear. There were days he woke steady, able to stand at the window and look out over the city as the morning markets bustled. Days where he sat on cushions by the hearth, watching the fire dance as though relearning what comfort meant. And there were days when shadows clung to him like a second skin. One morning, Alec found him curled on the edge of the bed, breath shuddering, hands pressed against his ribs. "What is it?" Alec asked, kneeling before him. "Where does it hurt?" Magnus swallowed, eyes rimmed red. "Nothing. Everything. I am just... remembering."
Alec wordlessly climbed onto the bed behind him and wrapped his arms around Magnus's torso, pulling him gently back into his chest. "Then remember with me," he murmured against his ear. "Let me take half of it." Magnus's breathing eased. His body softened, leaning fully back into Alec until their breaths matched. The Silent Brothers, when they came that evening, quietly noted that Magnus's pulse had steadied. Ruelle left honeyed lavender tea by his bedside and whispered blessings shaped like songs into his pillow.
The City Brims with New Life
Below the palace terraces, Alicante blossomed. Shops reopened their shutters wide. New apprentices were taken in by blacksmiths, tailors, gardeners, cooks. Children ran across squares that had been silent for months. Newly wedded couples placed fresh wreaths on the steps of the temple as offerings for a peace that had been paid dearly for. Rumours spread, too soft, awed marvels rather than gossip:
"The king walks the palace halls at dawn to check on the consort."
"Magnus healed the queen's herb garden just by walking past it."
"I swear I saw the king smiling yesterday...like truly smiling."
The kingdom breathed with its sovereigns. The people followed their example. Peace was contagious in its own way.
Alec Brings Magnus to the Council Balcony
It was a week after the return when Alec finally coaxed Magnus outside the private gardens and into the upper balconies where the council gathered to watch the city below. Magnus hesitated at the threshold. The last time he had stood on such a high place, it had been in chains, under Killian's shadow. Alec sensed the tremor that ran through him. He placed a hand over Magnus's, warm, grounding. "You are safe," he whispered. "No shadows here. No towers. Just home."
