The sun over Alicante rose brighter that morning than it had in generations, gilding the palace walls in molten gold and casting long beams of light across the gathering crowds. Bells had rung since dawn steady, resonant, echoing through the plains, the mountains, the forests reborn. The people had poured into the great courtyard by the tens of thousands, shoulder to shoulder, filling every road and terrace with a sea of expectant faces. Some held flowers some held banners most simply held hope they had come to see their future. Their heir. Their promise that darkness had passed.
Inside the grand hall, the royal family assembled in solemn splendour. The doors carved from Idrisian oak stood open to the balcony beyond, where sunlight waited like a crown itself. Every breath in the chamber was quiet and taut with reverence.
Alexander Gideon Lightwood, King of Idris, stood at the center of the marble dais. His ceremonial armour had been polished until it mirrored the dawn. The royal cloak, deep blue trimmed in silver thread, fell in regal folds behind him. The crown his father's crown rested on his brow, but today it felt lighter than ever before. For in his arms he held something far more precious than gold or steel.
Nicholas his son the heir of Idris.
Wrapped in a white velveteen blanket stitched with runes of protection, the infant slept soundly, unaware of the kingdom awaiting his first appearance. Alec gazed down at him with a softness that transformed the warrior king into something gentler, something luminous. His large hand supported the child's tiny form with delicate, instinctive devotion.
Beside Alec stood Magnus his consort, his beloved, the kingdom's miracle. Magnus wore deep royal indigo robes embroidered with silver vines and star-threads, the fabric flowing around him like moonlit water. A soft crown of fairy-forged gold rested upon his dark hair, and his skin, even after the exhaustion of birth, held a radiant glow no enchantment could replicate. He stood tall despite the lingering ache in his body, one hand resting lightly over his abdomen as habit, the other intertwined with Alec's free hand.
Princess Isabell, radiant in greens and golds, stood proudly behind them, her smile unwavering. Prince Jace and Princess Clarissa flanked her, their heads held high. Former King Robert and Queen Mayres remained near the rear, regal and serene, their eyes bright with both pride and memory.
A herald stepped forward, voice carrying like a trumpet blast across the hall.
"His Majesty, Alexander Gideon Lightwood, King of Idris, presents to the realm his firstborn son, Nicholas Asmodeus Lightwood-Bane, heir to the throne and future sovereign of this kingdom."
The court bowed the bells ceased silence descended thick, reverent, absolute.
Alec turned toward Magnus. Their eyes met dark blue meeting molten gold and the quiet between them filled with the weight of every battle they survived, every vow they had made, every breath shared in fear, in love, in hope. Magnus nodded once, slow and steady.
Alec stepped toward the balcony sunlight spilled around him like a coronation of light as he crossed the threshold. The crowd below erupted into a roar cheers, cries, gasps waves of sound crashing upward into the sky. People fell to their knees. Some reached their hands upward. Others pressed their palms over their hearts.
Alec raised his son slowly, reverently, presenting Nicholas to the kingdom of Idris the sunlight kissed the baby's cheeks, catching in the fine dark hair inherited from Magnus, gleaming in the soft pale skin inherited from Alec. The crowd's roar swelled again, thunderous, unstoppable, echoing across the mountains. Mothers wept. Fathers shouted blessings. Children pointed with wide, awestruck eyes.
"For Idris," Alec's voice carried across the balcony, low and powerful as rolling thunder, "a new dawn has come. Behold your future. Behold your heir."
Nicholas stirred in Alec's arms small, sleepy, perfect and let out a soft sound that made the entire courtyard gasp as one. Alec lowered him just enough to cradle him close again, pressing a kiss to his son's brow.
