The rooftop was colder than you expected. The night air brushed against your skin, sharp and restless, but Seokjin’s hand was warm as he tugged you along. He had that grin on his face — the one that made you suspicious and curious at the same time, the one that meant he was planning something.
“Close your eyes,” he instructed, guiding you toward the center of the roof.
You raised a brow. “And why exactly would I do that?”
“Because,” he said, exaggerating his tone as if you were missing something obvious, “it’s more fun that way.”
Despite your protests, you let your eyes flutter shut. You trusted him — and more importantly, you trusted the way he always managed to turn the most ordinary nights into something memorable. His hand slipped from yours briefly, and you heard a faint click followed by a small spark.
“Okay,” his voice softened, closer now, “open them.”
When you did, a lantern glowed faintly between you, its gentle light painting his face in golden hues. It wasn’t grand or dazzling, but the way the light caught his features made your breath catch. His eyes sparkled almost as much as the stars above, and in that moment, he looked like he belonged to both heaven and earth.
“Make a wish,” he said simply.
You let out a soft laugh. “What are we, ten?”
“Maybe,” he teased with a shrug. “But you’ll thank me later when your wish comes true.”
Still, you closed your eyes, the warmth of the lantern brushing against your eyelids. You thought of something small, almost silly, and then you opened your eyes again. Jin was watching you — not with his usual exaggerated playfulness, but with an expression that was unguarded, almost fragile.
“Did you make one?” he asked.
“Yes.”
“Good,” he said, but he didn’t look away. Instead, he set the lantern down carefully and stepped closer, his smile softening into something that reached deeper than words. “You know,” he began slowly, “I don’t really need wishes anymore.”
You tilted your head. “Oh? And why’s that?”
His answer was simple, spoken with the kind of sincerity that made your chest ache:
“Because you’re already here.”
The stars stretched endlessly above you, the city hummed faintly below, but none of it mattered. His fingers brushed yours, tentative but certain, as though he was afraid of breaking the moment. The rooftop was cold, the night was vast — but in his presence, you felt nothing but warmth.
And when Jin’s laughter bubbled out a second later, teasing you for how red your face had gotten, you realized something: maybe wishes did come true. They just didn’t always need lanterns to light the way.
