Can't The Future Just Wait?

The rest of the workday was a bit of a blur.

A few of the guards came to me to ask if I was alright, as apparently, a few other patients mentioned Bea approaching me before... All of that happened.

But apart from that, it was quiet. Slow, almost.

I glance at my watch as I walk to the break room. Midday.

I internally pump my first in the air. The cafeteria should be making lunch now...

Lyf's POV

"How the fuck did the guards let you off scot free?" Cress says with a laugh, walking next to me as we make our way to the cafeteria. "I mean, you beat the piss out of a random guy."

I shrug casually, glancing at my knuckles which were bruising slightly. "Claimed it was 'self defence,' and some buddies of mine testified."

"And by buddies, do you mean people that you threatened to say that?"

"Mhm~" I huff happily, before continuing down the hallway.

...

"... Why do that though?" Cress raised an eyebrow. My expression tightened.

"No reason. He was pissing me off."

...

Cress smirked. "It's because he was coming onto Yuu, huh?? Huh?"

"... You make it sound like I'm into them. I just didn't want them to be humiliated in front of everyone. I mean, who wants to be accosted by a living piece of algae?"

"Yeah, sure."

I slumped down between Fern and Cress with a happy sigh, placing my tray down.

Fern tilts his head. Cress on the other hand, is already stuffing his face.

"What?" I ask, propping my glasses onto my nose.

"... Help... Eat." Fern lifts his bound hands. Oh. Usually Jasmine helped him, but according to Fern, her pains got real bad after she came back inside. So she's probably in her room.

"Fine, fine." I say, scooping up some of the food for him as his antennae twitch happily.

Moon and Ruth snicker at each other, flicking their rice at people at other tables before swiftly looking away.

It's a relief to see them together again. I don't know how much longer I could have stood up with Ruth's whining.

Fern trilled softly as he ate, his sharp teeth clinking against the fork. Cress twitches at the noise.

"Y'know, I'm kinda glad you weren't there for the fight, Fern. Wouldn't want you stealing my thunder there."

Fern scowls at me, his eye twitching. "... Bitch." Ruth and Moon burst out laughing.

Most people had cleared out of the cafeteria now.

I'm leaning against the wall next to the door, sipping from a juice box while I wait for Cress to finish whatever the hell he's decided is important.

"... Lyf." Someone calls to me. I turn my head, expecting to see Cress.

I nearly choke on my drink as Yuu approaches me, a determined yet nervous expression on their face.

"Doctor. What a pleasure" I say flatly.

"... What happened out there?"

"Out where?"

"Oh, don't play dumb. You just beat someone into the ground for no reason that pertained to you!"

"Yuu, my dear, I have no clue what you're talking about~" I smile coyly, tilting my head. "Who's the insane one...?"

Yuu huffs in frustration, before looking back up at me. "Lyf, why did you defend me? You've never done anything like this. I just want to know why"

My expression hardens. They swallow nervously, taking a step back.

I take a shaky breath. "You know nothing about how I think. I do whatever the hell I want. I wanted to beat that bitch within an inch of his life. That's the only reason."

I smile manically at the doctor. "He was annoying. What I did had NOTHING. To do with you."

I push off the wall, leaving the doctor in shock. My breathing is heavy as I trudge back to my room, shoving a few patients as I walk.
