Some hours later, we all decide that me and Austin would go out wood cutting and food collecting while Trent and Alan stayed to watch the house, to Alan's reluctance we finally manage to get him to stay put.
"I've been in this house for a week now, a week!" Says Alan, "I need air, or I'm gonna go mental."
"I think we might need some rope," whispers Trent jokingly to me and Austin,
"What did you just say?" Says Alan.
Oh boy, good luck to Trent, hopefully he'll be in once piece by the time we get back.
"If we're not back in two hours, come looking for us," says Austin shutting the door and we both follow the road away from the house.
"Can you stop swinging that thing around?" I say as Austin swings the axe around in circles next to me,
He grins at me and holds is still by his side,
"Have you ever even been wood cutting?" I ask,
"Nope," says Austin smiling,
Great, I guess it wouldn't have mattered if we bring the mental head case Alan along instead.
"So, when do we start?" I say after walking in silence for 5 minutes,
"Well we're far enough from the house now that we won't attract walkers anywhere near it," says Austin,
"So, they'll come to is instead?"
"Pretty much," he says smiling down at me,
"I'm starting to think you're more of a head case than Alan," I say chuckling.
We walk off the road and he begins to hack at the bottom of a tree which stands about 10 metres tall while I stand awkwardly.
"I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's working," says Austin panting and backing away from the tree as it makes a loud crack then crashes to the ground."So, do we have a plan on how to get it back to the house?" I say watching Austin carefully as he uses his knees for support, after all he's been hacking at a tree none stop for the past 10 minutes.
"Take it back in sections," he says still leaning on his knees,
"Okay, would you like me to chop the wood up?" I ask looking down at him concerned. He does have a connective tissue disorder after all- I can't imagine what he feels like right now, he's probably putting his heart under so much stress.
He stands up straight and tries to convince me that he's fine and he can do it,
"I came all this way not to watch you struggle.. Give me the axe," I say holding my hand out, and he hands it to me reluctantly.
"I feel like such a weakling," he says turning away from me, "this disorder took my mother away from me, now it has it's hold on me."
I stop chopping the wood and walk up to him, "you're not completely hopeless," I say smiling up at him, "you did save me on more than one occasion." I say and I walk back towards the tree and continue cutting at the wood.
"I'm glad to have come across you kid," he says smiling at me,
"Me too," I say returning the smile, when I spot some walkers 30 metres away.
"Walkers," I say pointing at the zombies which are heading our way.
And we begin the walk back to the house quickly."So, are you and Trent a thing yet?" Asks Austin 5 minutes into the walk wiggling his eyebrows at me,
"Do you mean has he asked me out yet?" I say, "no, he hasn't."
"Just because he hasn't asked you out doesn't mean there's nothing going on between you two,"
"Oh come on, you're acting like my mother," I say grinning, but making myself a little sad thinking about her- but I can't be sad every time I think of her, because what's the point of looking back on our memories when it's just sadness?
Austin chuckles and we turn a corner and the house comes into view.
We walk up the steps where we're both given the fright of our lives when Alan runs up and pushes his face up against the window, opens his mouth and pretends to be a zombie."Fucking Alan," says Austin shaking his head and laughing.
We walk into the house where we're greeted by a giggling Alan,"Did I scare you?" He says tapping his fingers evilly like Mr Burn off the Simpsons.
"Yes," I say throwing a block of wood at him almost making him fall on his ass.
