I threw myself on my bed making the springs squeak. I was so glad to finally be alone. Then there was a knock on my door. Groaning into the bed with annoyance, I got up to answer it but stopped midway. I didn't want to see anyone. I heard a sigh on the other side and then footsteps going away. It must have been Perry. I didn't feel bad for ignoring her, I just was not up for anything or anyone right now. I needed time to myself. My mind couldn't focus one on thing. It was just a jumbled mess.
No matter what I did to explain what Damon told me, deep down in my heart I felt the truth. Everything was familiar. The first time he saw me, how his eyes filled with recognition but then turned ice cold. He knew. He always knew. I looked out my little window at the sky. It was dark gray.
Yes, Damon sounded crazy, but he was right.
I sank down in my chair and noticed a book on my desk and a note with Perry's writing.
You need to look at this. Where are you? We need to talk.
I grabbed the book and went to my bed. I opened the book with caution and on the front page was a drawing. Figures were all over the page and in the middle were a boy and a girl. Upon closer inspection, the girl looked like me and the guy looked like Damon. Big feathery wings extended from his back. The guy in the drawing was holding the girl whose body was limp. In the corner of the drawing a figure seemed to be racing towards them covered in flames.
I knew I needed to talk to Perry. Shutting the book, I jumped off the bed and raced to the library. Instead of finding Perry like I hoped, I found Aria and Jeremy playing cards.
"Slap jack, bitch," she shouted. Turning around she finally noticed me. "You, " she said pointing a finger at me, "You've been ditching me."
"No."
"Anyway, Cassie saw you getting into a black car the other night. she was going to tell Rhonda," Arya told me. "Have you taken a secret lover?"
"No. I just went to have a talk with Connor and -"
"Bam! I told you, Jeremy!"
"What?" I asked baffled.
"Well, Jeremy said you were with Damon, I said Connor."
"I was with Damon."
"Why, you little-" Arya began but I cut her off.
"Jeremy, I need to talk to you," I said.
"Alright, talk to me," he said assuming I wanted him to sneak me something in the school.
"No, I don't need anything. You're friends with Damon, right?" I asked.
"Well, I assume" he joked.
"So you trust him? Like if he told you something about his life, you'd believe him?"
Jeremy then squinted at me tilting his head.
"What exactly are we talking about?" he asked.
"Nothing, nevermind." I turned to leave.
My legs felt heavy and dull. I felt a breeze blow against my neck and spun around expecting to see a figure but there was nothing. I searched for Perry but had no luck. I found Mr. Rush instead.
"Excuse me," I said.
"Yes?" he answered me.
"I'm looking for Perry," I said swallowing.
"I'm not sure where she is, is there anything I can help with?" he asked.
Instead of answering him, I showed him the book. I had no other choice. Once he realized what I was holding, he sighed deeply.
"You have found it," he mumbled. "Come, lets have a talk."
I took a seat next to him and waited.
"So, does Perry know about this too?" he asked.
"I don't know," I said getting an odd feeling. "I haven't been able to find her after me and Damon kissed."
"You kissed Damon?" he asked a little loudly.
Oh crap. I didn't mean to blurt that part out. I could feel my cheeks turn red from embarrassment.
"Thanks for telling me!" I heard Arya shout across the library followed by a scolding from Jeremy about being quiet.
"A kiss between you two is irrelevant." he said shocked.
I watched as he skimmed the book furiously searching for something. I stopped his hand as he was turning a page, something catching my eye. Mr. Rush slowly returned to the page and I stared wide eyed at the drawing. The curves, the shape of hands, were all me. It was a drawing of me and I knew Damon had drew it.
"Are you okay?" Mr. Rush asked.
"Damon," I whispered aching to be near him again.
"He's damned." Mr. Rush said in a cold voice.
"What?" I asked.
"My god, child. You still haven't woken. Has he told you anything?" he asked me.
"Yeah, apparently we are star crossed lovers."
"Do you believe him?" he asked me with eagerness.
"I didn't at first, but now I do. It's just alot to take in. I don't read the bible or anything yet...." I trailed off.
"Surely you've been baptized?"
"No."
I heard a loud clatter and looked up to see Jeremy had fallen out from behind the book shelf. Arya came out too and helped him.
"Get up!" she yelled. "He's good!" she thumbs up me.
I shook my head and got up. I shut the book and tucked it back under my arm.
"Where are you going?" Mr. Rush asked me.
"To find him."
"Ill go-"
"No! I mean, you don't have to." I said getting annoyed with him. Why was he suddenly interested in my activities.
I shrugged my shoulders and took off towards the entrance. I stepped out into the humid air. A cloud was passing over the moon and everything seemed empty. I looked toward the cemetery where I left Damon and I knew he was there. I headed in that direction, Mr. Rush trailing behind me. I felt fear race up inside me when I noticed all kinds of figures off in the distance. We reached the cemetery gates and I saw Perry in the dip.
"PERRY!" I called out.
Perry spun around and I saw her trembling.
"What's wrong? What happened?" I frantically asked.
"I was looking for you and then a group ran this way. They went there but I couldn't follow."
I followed where she pointed. Off toward the deep woods, I knew they were there but this was something Perry couldn't see. The black figure was coaxing me toward it.
"See that? Something's flickering down there!" Perry shouted and pointed to the middle of the spot she said the others ran.
