Monday morning, Mrs Z stood behind a desk at the front of the class attempting a finger puppet show. She had called a last minute session for her religion class. Since I had already missed a lot of the beginning of the semester, I'd have a lot to catch up on, which also explained why I was the only note taking person here.
When the sun shined in my eyes, it made me realize just how long I've been sitting in here. My back felt sore when I straightened it. What was with this show anyway? We weren't five year olds.
Now I watch as Mrs Z moved her fingers in the air and put her fingers over the light. Just then I spotted figure lurking behind Mrs Z.
"As you all know when God gave his angels their own will, one crossed the line." I watched as Mrs Z made her fingers into horns.
Someone laughed behind me and I tried my best not to turn around and tell them to shut up. I was tired, hungry, and most of all irritated. Instead of going to dinner, Mrs Z called us into class and we were brought nasty cold subs. They had slices of different meats, and room temperature cheese.
I took out the meat and was about to bite into my cheese sub when a hand had snatched it from me. Connor leaned down and exposed a handful of skittles. Winking he had went back to his desk and ate the remainder of his candy.
"Don't eat those. Who knows what he drugged these with," Arya had said and took the skittles handing me a twix bar.
What felt like hours later. we were all still stuck in the classroom.
"And does any one know who the wicked angel was that battled God?" Mrs Z asked.
"Jeremy!" shouted Arya.
"Not exactly," Mrs Z joked causing the class to laugh and Jeremy to glare at Arya.
"We call him Satan now but he has many names. Devil, Belial, even Lucifer.
Cassie who had been sitting in front of me leaned her head over her shoulder.
"Or Athena," she said. I could see her cheeks rise in a sneer.
I drilled my eyes into the back of her head ready to pelt her with my folder, when Mrs Z caught my attention instead. She had shaped her fingers to look like someone falling down or off of something.
"Satan and his angels fell. Further from heaven."
Her sentence bothered me. I looked over at Damon who met my eyes but then stuck his head in his notebook. It brought back the memories of my dream last night. Me and Damon at the lake and after he had took off I had to courage to chase him. Then Damon had wrapped me in his arms and we were flying up into the sky. It had only been a dream.
I sighed and rested my chin on my hands. I remembered I was about to wack Cassie but by now it seemed stupid. I decided not to let Cassie know she affected me.
A paper airplane landed infront of me. I looked over at Arya who held a smile.
Obviously you're not daydreaming about Satan. Where did you and Damon scurry off to?
I hadn't had the chance to talk to Arya lately so how did she know I went off with him? I watched as Arya threw another airplane to me. And unfortunately so did Cassie. She reached out quickly and snatched the plane but I wasn't going to let her win this one. So just as fast, I snatched it back and a loud ripping sound was heard around the room.
"Athena and Cassie!" Mrs Z yelled at us. I had enough time to hide the other part of the note in my pocket. "I would hope that whatever you two have to say can be said out loud?"
My mind raced. If I didn't come up with something, Cassie would and there's no telling how far she'd embarrass me.
"Cassie was just telling me that she doesn't agree with your view. She has her own ideas."
"Well, Cassie, If you have other ideas, I'd like to hear them," Mrs Z said.
"What the fuck," Cassie murmured. Clearing her throat she stood up. "well, you said hell is for those who betray others. I think its more for cowards. Those who are weakest and spineless. To me traitors actually made a decision." She said eyeing me.
I had stopped listening to her rant when a cold shiver went up my spine. The figures. they were here. A dark hand circled its grimy fingers around my ankle and its other hand had tried to reach inside my pocket for the note. With everything I had ,I pinched its hand. Across the room, Arya was starring at me with wide eyes.
Mrs Z turned on the lights and the figure slithered away.
"I think that's enough. You'll be ready for tomorrows exam," Mrs Z said.
I unfold Arya's note.
tell me he didn't give you that sorry excuse about coming out of a bad relationship?
Wow, I need to talk to Arya and find out more about him. He was standing in front of me. His red belt at eye level and I remembered I still had Arya's note open. Putting it quickly away I looked up at him. His grey eyes twinkled brightly like he just had hours of sleep.
"I wanted to say sorry about the other day. I take it you made it back okay," he said sounding so formal.
I tried to smile at him, tell him about my dream but now it just seemed to weird.
"What did you think about Mrs Z's lesson?" he asked me as if nothing happened.
"It was terrible. Did you think so too?"
"No."
"Then you liked it?" I asked
"Not really, it's in my families culture to study these things."
It took a moment for me to remember, but once it did I blurted out the first thing that came to my mind.
"I didn't think you had any family," I said.
"Why wouldn't I?" he asked curiously.
"I mean,..I just," I stuttered. The word stalker flashed in my head.
"Hey, you want to stay here for another lesson or what?" Jeremy came up behind him.
"Nah, lets go," Damon said.
He looked at me one more time then him and Jeremy walked away. He didn't look back again and it made me feel really alone
