I stood standing outside looking back and forth between the path that led to the lake and the one that led to the cemetery. I had received two notes today that were slipped under my room door. One was from Connor, saying he wanted to talk and to meet at the cemetery. The other was from Damon and all it said was one word. 'Lake'.
My eyes lingered on the path to the lake and I smiled. My lips still felt swollen from the kiss Damon and I shared last night. More like the make out session. I couldn't take the feeling of his hands as they ran through my hair or his lips on the nick of my neck.
My mind traveled to what happened after. We finally kissed and then he backed away. Like he was afraid to even touch me. He kept muttering weird things like 'they'll come', 'I shouldn't have kissed you', 'I doomed us both'. He had wrapped me up in his arms after his melt down and I eventually dosed off.
I remember bits of pieces of the night after I passed out. He had carried me to my room. I recall mumbling we were going to get caught. Then the next moment I was in my bed and he kissed my forehead whispering 'don't disappear'. I just smiled and then drifted off to sleep.
I had slept through all my classes not waking up once. I had grabbed something to eat and then came out here to find Damon but first I had to tell Connor I was done. I sucked in a breath and began walking to the cemetery. It was another humid day and the sun was shining annoyingly in my eyes. No one was outside and there was not a hint of a breeze.
Connor was leaning against a tall stone. His elbows behind him and his shoulders were hunched over. His converse shoe kicked a few stones at his feet. Usually he knew when I was near and would immediately make eye contact but this time he stood staring down.
His hair was nappy and stuck out at odd angles. He slowly lifted his head and he looked like hell. He had dark circles under his eyes as if he didn't sleep at all.
"I didn't think you'd come," he said his voice sounding rough.
I bit the inside of my cheek nervous about what I was just about to tell him. He tried to reach for me but I backed away. His eyes sparkled with hurt but then he collected himself.
"I know you're mad about last night. And I'm sorry," he said.
"Yeah among other things. Disappointed. Confused, maybe." I shuddered at the memory of the guy who tried to grab me. "Why did you take me there? If you were just going to start a fight."
"I wasn't trying to get in another fight!" he shouted standing straight. "Sorry," he said sighing. "I just couldn't stand the way that guy grabbed you. You shouldn't be tossed around like that. You should be treasured. Cherished. I want to be the one who does all that. The only one, Athena."
I looked down and tucked my hair behind my ear. Here goes nothing.
"Connor, you're a great guy and all--"
"Fuck," he shouted. "It's him isn't it? Price? Don't tell me you just want to be friends," he said anger flaring in his eyes.
"Why not?"
"I want to be more than that, you know this." he said coming toward me.
I felt my stomach tie in knots. I didn't want Connor. Why can't he see this? He walked up to till he was a few inches away. He cupped my cheek and I looked at him. His eyes were pleading.
"Please. Don't do this. Let me be the one," he begged.
I let out a tired sigh. He just doesn't get it. Then he backed up.
"It's Price. Isn't it?!" he growled.
"I'm sorry. Things just happened."
"Just happened?? Wait, let me guess. He looked at you so lovingly last night? The way he showed up and rescued you? You don't know him that well and you're already choosing!" he said pulling his hair in frustration.
