I Just Died~ Amerie
"I just died in your arms tonight"
Lyriq POV
"This is a lovely home you've got here, Lyriq." My caseworker, Shay, warmly smiled as she walked around the apartment.
"Thank you." I reciprocated her politeness.
"Ooh, girl this is cute. Where you get this set from?" Her Atlanta accent slipped out.
I lightly chuckled.
"Girl, this one Black owned spot down the street? They shit fire. They'll give you a discount too. Tell them you know me." I replied.
"You talm bout Jennings? The one on 6th street? In Chinatown?" She asked.
I nodded.
"Girl, hell yeah. They got some bad stuff in there." I replied.
"I'm gon have to go in there. But, I really like this place, girl. You did your big one; I see you.." she hyped me up.
I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face.
"Does that mean ima get my son back?" I asked.
"If it were up to me; he would've been home. But, you know how the system is. They don't listen when we report shit. You still got court cases and hearings. So I could not give you a solid answer. But, I'm sure he will love his new home when it's time for him to come back..and, don't tell nobody, like for real." She started.
"Girl, I won't." I replied.
She cleared her throat.
"My nigga work at the office, that your baby-daddy ran his mouth too; they're tryna get you with parental kidnapping—so, unless you can somehow prove your claims of his abuse, he had residence here, you gon be fucked. I'm just telling you right now. California doesn't play when it comes to children. A lot of them muhfuckas is dirty too." She whispered to me.
"Damn." I cursed.
"Yup, girl, I know. I can see through his bullshit. He reminds me of my baby-daddy. Niggas allow you to count on them financially and then play dirty. Weaponizing stability because you don't wanna be victimized anymore." She rolled her eyes.
"I just never get a fucking break." I shook my head.
"I'm sorry for everything you're going through.. a friend of mines hosts group meetings. Now, I know you're Christian and all—we atheist, but we're welcoming—
"Oh, I'm not Christian. This is an ankh. That's femininity." I cut her off, chuckling.
"Ohhh. Girl I'm slow as fuck." She busted out laughing.
"Let me know when them meetings is.. do yall have food?" I asked.
"Hell yeah. Tomorrow night we're having garlic Parmesan-
"I'll be there!" I cut her off.
——
"You two beefing?" Bob asked me. He must've noticed the stank faces I gave to Billie.
"Nah, man." I shook my head.
I can't be getting my hours cut.
"She speaks so highly of you, like a little lovebird. I wonder what's going on. Either way, it isn't my business. I'm too old to be involved with you kids. I'll be out of your hair. If we don't get rushed; you can just sit and do nothing. It's what I do." Bob walked off.
He's so chill.
"I'm sorry." I heard from behind me.
It was bitch-ass billlie.
"Hoe, get yo goofy ass out of my face." I cussed her out.
"But—Nevermind." She gave up.
If I weren't thinking critically; I'd shoot her stupid ass in the fucking face. On my dead homie.
"Bob, I'm on break!!" I yelled to the owner.
"We ain't got no rushes anyway. Take however long you need, I ain't gon clock you out.. I'm fucking loaded. A few hour break won't hurt me, sweetheart." He voiced a few feet away.
He's so fucking cool. I love white men that are actually nice.
I stood outside the shop, collecting my thoughts.
When I heard a familiar voice.
"Don't hit me, daddy. Please?" Nasir begged.
"Bitch ass nigga—I told your stupid ass bout playing wit me. Don't be playing with no fucking girl toys, faggot! Your bitch ass mama got you thinking you a girl?" Jeremiah spat.
"Nasir!" I yelled.
I was almost there. I almost got him. I almost talked to my baby.
Jeremiah scooped him up and ran to the car, they sped off within seconds.
"Fuck." I cursed.
He got my baby begging not to get beat on, he got my baby terrified.
I gotta get my son back ASAP..
Billie wanna call me a deadbeat when I'm trying my best to see my son.
I'm sure a deadbeat wouldn't be willing.
