There was no way he could be telling the truth. I certainly couldn't be related to anyone with ice powers. Before I could utter another word he blasted me out of the clearing. Ouch, my back. And when I sat up, all I could see was trees, the clearing was gone. I stood, brushed the snow off of myself. It was getting dark, and Kenzie would be off work soon. I quickly made my way there.
Mackenzie had a seasonal job at the Storybrooke mall. As Santa's elf. Her uniform was undeniably cute, although I think she hated wearing it. I arrived and there was no line.
"Happy holidays! Come sit on Santa's lap and get a photo with—" she started in a nasally voice as she looked up. Then she dropped into her normal speaking voice. "Oh it's you my darling." She smiled. I knew she didn't like me seeing her this way but I loved it. "Charming as ever." I grinned. "You know me, brining in the bank, one Christmas miracle at a time." She joked.
I hung around and waited a few minutes for her to finish work, and then change. She wore a bright pastel winter coat, mittens and earmuffs and well as big snow boots. We walked outside, holding hands, I explained what happened.
"Wait, the scoop slinger is your cousin?" She said in disbelief. "I don't know how." I said, at a loss for answers. "He must be behind the ice wall. This has to be it." She said. "My love..." I began.
It began to gently snow, this excited Kenzie. "I've been dying for another adventure, Alex!" She exclaimed. "This could be really dangerous." I warned.
"Whatever comes our way, we will face it together." She said
"I think he wants to start another curse. To freeze Storybrooke and take it for himself." I told her.
"Then we'll defeat your evil ice cousin. Love can thaw—" she stopped and took out her phone. "Oh my god." She muttered. "Emergency at the station. From Emma."
Matthew's plan was in motion.
We stormed into the police station, ice covered the walls, and the man at the front desk was frozen. Kenzie and I made our way further inside and found Emma by the cells. She was frozen too. Shock hit us both. Kenzie went to her, tears in her eyes, until we heard "She's alive, get over it."
Our heads darted left. Petra Pan was lounging in her cell wearing a winter coat with a candle next to her in the corner, still wearing magic shackles. Kenzie went up to the bars, emotionally distressed. "What are you talking about?" She raised her voice.
"She's cursed. By Matthew." Petra explained.
"How do you know about him?" I shot back quickly.
"Haduyuknoabatim!" Petra mocked me in a nasally witch voice. "He went through her to get to me. Right after he took her magic away."
"What..?" Kenzie whispered.
"Matthew visited me a few weeks ago. Asking for a spell to take away another's magic. We cut a deal. If I gave him what he needed to enact his curse, he'd free me after. Then I can go back to neverland." Petra explained.
Mackenzie and I looked at each other, fear in our eyes. We haven't had to face anything like this yet. Despite both our parents having to face sorcerers in the past, history repeats itself, and now it's our turn.
Kenzie turned to Petra, angry. "What does he need to enact his curse?" She growled through her teeth.
"Well, I thought you'd never ask!" Petra exclaimed. "With the spell I gave him, he's going to take the magic of everyone in Storybrooke who has it, including mine, temporarily. So no one can stand in his way."
"How will he know who has magic and who doesn't? He can't get to everyone." Mackenzie said.
"There's this little thing called a magic mirror. You might find it on a wall. At the Mills' house." Petra snickered.
"That's probably where he went next." I said, looking to Kenzie.
"We have to go!" She said, then looking at Emma with the intention to return for her.
"There was one more little ingredient for his curse of eternal winter... what was it?" Petra said. I knew she was egging us on but we didn't have time. We rushed to the Mills' house.
They lived in a large home. One big happy disfunctional family. Regina and Robin lived in one side with their son, my friend Chris, who I knew didn't possess magic, and on the other, Zelena with Marcus and Melissa.
The door was open when we arrived, the lights were out. Kenzie went in first, I swear that girl is braver than me. We made our way upstairs and saw a few more of Matthew's 'ice sculptures' of Regina, Zelena, Marcus and Melissa.
Mackenzie looked at Melissa with detest. "She got what she deserved." She said.
"I didn't know she had magic too." I realized.
"He got the mirror." We heard. Chris was there. He looked... traumatized, but determined. "We have to find him." He said.
Kenzie and I looked at each other.
"So much for winter break." She said.
