Frost appeared at the rim of the window as snowflakes floated the blanket of white on the ground outside. I stared a few moments before turning back to my friends standing around the living room. We were all geared up.
Together we devised a plan to trap Matthew, with only Kenzie's magic available to us, we had to improvise. We figured causing a collapse in the mines was too dangerous for ourselves, so we opted using the hospital's lockdown system, using Summer and Isabella as bait. They agreed to it.
"He needs the heart of two sisters. So we're gonna give them to him." I said
"You're sure that the room we trap him in will hold?" Ethan inquired.
"Have you got a better idea?" Chris shot back.
"Once he's in there..." I said. "I have a plan for that too.
Ethan sharpened my sword and his axe. I knew the plan was risky. Kenzie came up to me. "I don't like you going to him alone. It could be me, I could draw him out." She offered.
"No, Kenz. He wants your magic. I won't let him hurt you." I told her.
"You almost died last time!" She argued. A bit of silence fell. The ambiance of Christmas oldies on a record player was the only sound for a few seconds.
"I have to smash the mirror. It has to be me." I said, looking back at the snow outside, then gave her a hug. "I love you."
"And I'll tell you when you get back." She responded. She was definitely cranky.
I went to the door, and just as I was about to open it, I heard Ashley.
"Alexander."
"Yes, Ash?" I said. She pulled small vile from her bag and showed it to me. A magic bean was inside.
"I found this in my mother's things, hidden away in a drawer. Just in case of emergency." She said.
I examined it, and put it back in her hand.
"You keep it. You might need it more than I do." I stepped outside, without my sword, and picked up a sharp looking rock off the side of the road, and made my way back to Matthew's lair in the forest.
I walked inside, hands raised to show I was unarmed.
"Have you come to beg?" I heard his voice echo. "I've come to make a peace offering." I replied.
"You've piqued my interest. Come." I heard a voice from up some stairs. There he was doing that floating thing again.
"Curious..." I muttered.
"What can you offer me that I don't already have?" He asked.
"The heart of two sisters." I said confidently.
His eyebrow raised. "How?"
"Search in your mirror and you'll know it to be true." I told him. "Summer and Isabella Johnson."
Matthew slowly walked over to the mirror and mumbled softly. "Mirror mirror..." and the image of the twins sitting in the hospital together appeared. The two of them were pretending one was a patient so he wouldn't know I know them personally.
"What do you want in return?" He asked.
"That you let the rest of us go free while you lay a curse on this town." I said. He stared in the mirror a while. I could've attacked him, but that would've been reckless. Instead my eyes darted around as I examined what was here. Pretty much what you'd expect except for the one thing that caught my eye. Something that didn't belong. A deep purple bottle with gold trimmings and an elegant cap.
"What's that for? A little liquid courage?" I joked. He looked towards the bottle.
"Oh..." Matthew said. "You of all people don't want to open that." Even curiouser. "I'll take your offer. Then you and your rinky-dink band of misfits can go." He said.
"I just have to know. Why their hearts?" I asked.
"My mother's nieces, my cousins who were sisters Anna and Elsa had a connection like no other. I need two hearts of sisters with a similar connection and freeze them to enact the curse." He explained. I wandered as he spoke, he seemed to pay no mind. When I had my chance, I took the rock from my pocket and shattered the mirror. The glass fell all over the floor.
Before I could even think, icicles pinned me to the wall.
"Clever fox." Matthew said. "But you don't stand a chance. Those hearts will be mine." He rushed off, with his veil flowing behind him. But it wouldn't be long until I broke out.
Some time passed, my dark blue leather jacket was full of holes, and I tried to break the ice or pull myself free but it wouldn't budge. Of course, it was magic. Wait a minute, I thought, and simply removed myself from the pinned jacket. It was a little too cold for just a t-shirt but I'd have to make do. I looked at the bottle before running. Something told me I should leave it, and I sprinted towards the hospital.
"Mirror, check." I said to myself.
It wasn't hard to follow Matthew because he practically left a trail of thin ice behind him as he walked. I arrived on scene at the hospital. There were nurses and doctors there. And they were scared. I ran as quick as I could. I saw Matthew entering the room where the twins were. And Chris next to the alarm to enact the lockdown. The plan was far in motion. Summer and Isabella backed up towards a curtain that hid a door they could escape through. Ethan shouted. "Now!!" And Chris went to pull the lever but it happened so fast. No alarm went off.
Quick as a flash, Matthew had struck Chris. A huge piece of ice stuck out of his shoulder, and the ice turned red with blood. He fell to the floor. Ethan dashed for the alarm and pulled it. The hospital went into lockdown and I got stuck behind a door. I pounded on it. Mackenzie was just on the other side, and we looked in fear towards the twins. Matthew raised his hands and the room's windows shattered in a loud hiss. The lockdown didn't work. He raised his hand to reach for Isabella's chest. Just then, Ashley called out, "Summer!" She threw the magic bean.
Summer caught it and whispered "Wonderland." And a portal opened beneath the twins, taking them out of this realm. Matthew was left alone and went straight to Ashley. He looked her in the eye.
"You shouldn't have done that." He said, and plunged his hand into her chest, ripping her heart out. Ashley looked shocked and in pain. Mackenzie screamed and Ethan charged at Matthew with his axe. But with a flick of his wrist, he teleported away. A doctor used a key card on the door for me, letting me go to the others. The doctors ran to help Chris, who was bleeding.
Ethan held Ashley, she was fine, despite having no heart in her chest.
I held my girlfriend in my arms. She cried into my chest, over what just happened to her sister. But my expression was stone cold. I knew Matthew's next move. He was coming for Mackenzie's heart. And I want going to let that happen.
