The next day, Kenzie, Chris and I journeyed into the Forest. Chris had his bow and arrow, I carried the Vorpal sword and Kenzie had... her plucky attitude. "We need to get you a real weapon one of these days." Christopher told her. She laughed. "You forget, archer that I have magic at my fingertips." She said, pleased with herself, possibly because she didn't have to lug around anything heavy to fight with. Not that she couldn't, but that she chose not to.
Kenzie and Chris had stayed the night at my place. My parents were home, and we had told them what was going on. Several of the most powerful people in Storybrooke were incapacitated, and it was up to the kids to save the day.
Chris walked behind us a bit. He liked having a view of the terrain. He compared himself to someone called Hawkeye. I don't know, he reads picture books called comics, while I enjoy a wordy novel.
"With all that's going on you seem quiet." Mackenzie said to me. I had been looking at the snow, crushing softly beneath our boots. I smirked a bit. "I was just thinking about last night... You shared my bed with me for the first time."
"We've slept in the same bed before." She mentioned.
"Yes, but this time it was in my bed. I guess that makes a difference. And my parents knew and they didn't seem to care." I said.
She smiled. Her lips were pink and glossy. Mine were dried out from the cold. I think she noticed that. "Here..." she reached into her bag for some chapstick. But before she could place it in my hand I kissed her, sharing what was on her lips.
It lasted a moment, she felt warm and cold at the same time, and her lips were soft. I pulled back looking at her. Snowflakes littered her hair and her nose and cheeks were red from the cold. "What was that for?" She asked, grinning.
"We're about to enter an evil ice wizard's lair and I didn't want last night to be the last time." I said.
"Get a room!" Chris called out from behind us.
"Right." I bit my lip. "Back to it then." We journeyed onward.
We were deep in the woods. Getting back could take a while.
"What makes you think you could find it again? I thought you said it disappeared." Chris asked.
"He's out here, just hiding." I told him.
"Are you going to kill him?" Kenzie suddenly asked.
"What?"
"Somehow I doubt politely asking him to stop isn't going to suffice."
"I'll do what I have to do to save the others and protect Storybrooke." I said, unsure.
"You're not a killer, Alexander." She said.
"Then I'll do it." Chris chimed in. "He froze my mother. An arrow in his neck should thaw her out.
"It might not be that simple." Kenzie said.
We must've been halfway to the next town. Chris was snacking on trail mix. "Here. Use the spell." I looked to Kenz. She looked uneasy, this was a difficult spell. She used her abilities to reveal and concealing magic nearby. Nothing appeared. Maybe it didn't work, maybe there was nothing here.
"Damn it!" I muttered. It was like finding a needle in a haystack. We were about to turn the other way when she said "Wait."
Mackenzie took slow steps. She looked as if she was seeing something invisible, until suddenly she disappeared.
"Holy crap." Chris said.
"Princess?" I called out.
"I'm here!" I heard her but I couldn't see her. "It's an optical illusion!" She said. I couldn't find where she disappeared through the trees, until suddenly her hand reached out and grabbed me by the shirt, pulling me in. Chris followed too.
We had found it. Well, Kenzie did. "Chill out, my Prince." She joked, as we turned to see the lair had grown more established. We started our way in.
"Stay frosty." I said.
"If I hear one more ice pun—" Chris started, our voices echoing in an icy tunnel of doom.
