Chapter 10

He pulled away, and I found myself pulling him closer. In that moment, I forgot about the world around me. Everything else was nonexistent. I didn't want anything to come between us. In that moment, he was mine.

"Sophia..", he said pulling away once again. I looked at him longingly, and he responded with a gentle smile.

I was completely and utterly speechless. I could not formulate sentences in my brain or even put words together. It was indescribable.

The feelings of his lips on mine was still present as he spoke. "What are we doing?", he asked. I couldn't help but laugh. "Why are you laughing?", he asked almost about to begin laughing himself.

"I don't know...", I responded.

"You don't know why you're laughing?"

"No, I'm laughing because I don't know what we're doing. This doesn't make sense. It's just... surreal."

"So... what happens now?" I hesitated. "I like you, Sophia. I like you a lot." I couldn't help but smile. I might have even blushed as well. "Do you want to go out on a real date?"

I wasn't sure how to respond. I wanted to say yes, yet I didn't. I didn't even have a chance to respond before I heard the very familiar sound of the ultra-squeaky voice of Alexis. "I knew it!", she practically screamed as she ran towards us dragging Zach with her. "I knew you guys would end up together!"

"Alexis--", I tried to stop her.

"I guess you win, Soph. He did ask you out, but still. I am so happy for you guys!"

Liam had a confused look on his face. I'm sure he was weirded out by her squealing, but something suggested that he was bothered by another reason. "What does she mean 'you win'?", he asked.

"Nothing", I answered quickly.

"But she said that you win because I asked you out."

Alexis began to realize that she shouldn't have opened her mouth as he started to back away. She mouth an "I'm sorry" as she dragged Zach off to some other place.

Liam continued to look at me with stern eyes. I had to explain. "I just assumed that you would ask me out again tonight."

"So you made a bet about whether or not I would?" I hesitated to respond and the sternness in his eyes turned to hurtfulness. He began to back away as he tried to grasp what was going on.

"No! It's not like that! Alexis was trying to set us up, and she got in my head. I wasn't trying to hurt you."

By now, he had turned most of his body away from me and was trying not to make eye contact. "But you made a bet about me, like I was just a piece in your game, just a wager."

"No--"

"Is that all I am too you? A bet?"

"No..."

"I see... I understand now that all the time I've spent with you was a waste." He began to walk away, so I grabbed his arm.

"Wait, it wasn't a waste!"

He shook my arm away and screamed, "Yes it was! From day one you wanted nothing to do with me, and I basically wedged myself into your life! Now, I'm just some big joke to you."

I had never seen him like this before, and he startled me. "That's not true...", I replied weakly. I think he could tell that I was suprised.

He didn't respond. Instead, he stared at the ground. "I think I'm going to go home now."

"You don't have to go."

"I've already made enough of a fool out of myself. I don't need to stand here and embarrass myself even further."

I stood idly by as he walked down the pavement. I wasn't going to try and stop him because he seemed pretty upset, and I wouldn't blame him. Besides, I think he had already made up his mind.

He wanted nothing to do with me.
