Next day
The next afternoon found Anna curled into the corner of the Gryffindor common room, legs tucked beneath her, a Charms textbook propped against her knees. The fire crackled lazily, casting a warm amber glow over scattered parchments and yawning students. The Quidditch team had been gone to practice for hours now, and the common room felt unusually calm without the echo of jokes of the twins.
Anna was halfway through a particularly tedious section on Switching Spells when the portrait hole swung open.
The reaction was immediate.
Laughter erupted, sharp, startled, uncontrollable. A few first-years nearly fell off their chairs. Someone actually choked on their pumpkin juice.
Anna looked up, startled, and followed the line of everyone's gaze.
Oliver Wood stood in the doorway.
Or rather, Oliver Wood stood there with hair the precise shade of a ripe Hufflepuff lemon. Bright, blazing and unmistakably yellow.
Her book slid forgotten into her lap as she stared. Then, suppressing a laugh, Anna shot to her feet and hurried after him as he stalked across the room, mortified and muttering under his breath.
"Oliver, wait!", she called.
He stopped abruptly near a shadowed alcove, safely out of sight of the roaring common room. His hands flew to his head again, as if sheer willpower might reverse the damage.
"What in Merlin's name has happened to my hair?", Anna asked, though she already suspected the answer.
"I honestly haven't a clue", Oliver groaned. "It was fine this morning. I took a shower after practice and thi.....!", He froze mid-rant. "Wait. Of course. It's them. The Weasley twins", his jaw tightened with grim resolve. "I'll deal with them later".
Anna pressed her lips together, failing miserably to hide her smile.
He realised how much attention he was still drawing. "I have to go. I cannot be seen like this".
And with that, he marched off toward the boys' dormitories like a general heading into battle.
The moment he vanished, Anna let out the laugh she'd been holding in, soft at first, then helpless. Shaking her head, she slipped out of the common room, already knowing exactly where to look.
She found them in the corridor near the staircases, the rest of the Quidditch team trailing along, tired, muddy, and buzzing with post-practice energy. George and Fred were at the centre of it all, laughing far too loudly, far too innocently.
As soon as Fred spotted Anna, his grin widened. He gave George a friendly pat on the shoulder.
"Uh-oh", Fred announced cheerfully, clapping a hand on George's shoulder. "Your favourite person's approaching. I'll leave this mess to you, mate".
Then, with a wicked snigger, he slipped past Anna and disappeared with the others, leaving George alone in the corridor, hands shoved into his pockets, rocking slightly on his heels.
Anna folded her arms and approached him.
"Georgie", she said and sounded rather sweet to George's ears. "Why did you do it?".
George blinked at her. "Do what?".
"Oh, don't", she warned.
"I'm completely innocent", he replied, face a picture of wounded sincerity.
"Stop pranking Oliver", Anna said, trying and failing to sound stern.
George tilted his head thoughtfully. "Could've been Freddie".
