ANNA'S POV:
The first week of December settled over Hogwarts like a breath the castle had chosen not to release. Frost crept across the tall windows of the Gryffindor girls' dormitory, feathering the glass in delicate white veins, while somewhere deep in the walls pipes hummed softly with warmth and distant magic.
Anna sat cross-legged upon her bed, freshly returned from the prefects' bathroom, her hair still damp and faintly scented with enchanted lavender that lingered in the air around her. Chocolate lay curled in her lap, purring in steady, sleepy contentment as her fingers moved through his fur without thought.
It should have been calming. It wasn't.
Nothing was wrong, not truly.
Which was precisely why everything felt wrong.
Things with George were still... complicated. Not broken, not distant. If anything, they were closer than ever, with charged glances, quiet smiles meant only for each other, conversations that dipped into something deeper before either of them could name it.
And the source of that complication had pale hair, a Ravenclaw tie, a laugh that carried.
Darla Carson.
She wasn't cruel. She wasn't unkind. She was bright, confident, friendly in a way that seemed effortless.
And she noticed George.
Bright greetings in the Great Hall. Easy smiles in corridors. Sitting beside him during study sessions as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
And every time, Anna felt it, small and sharp beneath her ribs.
Fred had scoffed about it.
Diana had grown increasingly unimpressed.
Anna said nothing.
Ginny and Hermione were already asleep, curtains drawn, the dormitory filled with the soft rhythm of steady breathing. The door creaked open, and Diana stepped inside, arms full of books, and an expression carefully arranged into patience.
"Anna, where have you been?", she asked, setting the books down with more force than necessary.
"The prefects' bathroom", Anna replied quietly. She pulled the blanket over herself and closed her eyes, as though sleep might chase the thoughts away.
It didn't.
After a pause, Diana said gently, "She was there again".
Anna's eyes opened at once.
"In study hall", Diana continued. "Right beside George. Talking the entire time. And she just...", Diana exhaled sharply. "She kept complimenting him. His hair. His smile. Called him handsome twice".
Twice.
The word settled heavy in Anna's chest.
She swallowed, forcing her voice to remain even. "And...George?".
Diana hesitated, not cruelly, just honestly.
"He didn't encourage it. But he didn't stop her either".
That hurt more.
Anna stared at the frost on the window.
"I don't want to mind", she whispered. "He's allowed to talk to people".
Diana studied her. "That's not the part you mind".
Anna pushed the blanket aside and stood.
"I just want to see", she said quietly.
The study hall glowed warmly with floating lamps when she arrived. And there they were.
Fred lounged opposite George, wearing an expression that suggested mild suffering. Lee Jordan sat beside him, clearly enjoying the situation far too much.
