The morning sun streamed through the wide glass windows of Crestview High, illuminating the chaotic ecosystem of the Senior Student Council office. Inside, the battle lines for the annual Leadership Cup were already drawn, painted in color-coordinated ink and marked by the distinct scent of fresh lamination.
Roseanne Park leaned back in her swivel chair, propping her mud-stained sneakers right beside a tower of neat folders. She flicked a crumpled piece of paper directly into the wastebasket across the room. Perfect shot. She pumped her fist in the air. "And the crowd goes wild. Park does it again. Absolutely legendary."
"Get your filthy shoes off the official council desk before I staple your laces to the floor, Roseanne."
Jennie Kim did not look up from her desk. She was operating a heavy-duty laminating machine with the razor-sharp precision of a surgeon performing open-heart surgery. Her blazer was immaculate, her pastel sticky notes were color-coordinated by priority level, and her sharp cat-eyes were narrowed strictly at the edges of the permission slip she was sealing.
"Relax, Nini," Roseanne grinned, letting her chair drop forward with a heavy thud. She adjusted the collar of her rumpled uniform shirt, which intentionally violated three distinct dress code policies. "The desk likes me better anyway. It told me so. It said, 'Roseanne, thank you for bringing energy and charisma into this sterile office of bureaucratic doom.'"
"It's not doom, it's organizational hierarchy," Jennie countered, placing the newly laminated sheet onto a stack of precisely aligned documents. "Which you would understand if you ever read the student handbook instead of using it to prop up your desk leg."
"Hey, that leg was wobbly, and the handbook is five hundred pages of pure nap fuel. Besides, who needs rules when you have raw talent? I solved the Mystery of the Missing Chemistry Flasks in twenty minutes flat last week."
"You found them in the cafeteria kitchen because Lisa was using them to measure her iced coffee syrup," Jennie snapped, finally looking across at her rival. "That wasn't an investigative genius. That was luck."
"It was instinct. Eyes closed, head first, can't lose," Roseanne declared, striking a dramatic pose. "And let me remind you of the scoreboard, Madame Vice President. Current student cases closed: Roseanne Park, forty-two. Jennie Kim, forty-one. I am leading the race."
Jennie's pen snapped clean in half. She stared at the broken plastic in her hand, her breathing turning shallow as her classic stress response kicked in. Without a word, she reached into her pocket, pulled out a small hair tie, and began frantically braiding a small section of her front bangs to calm her nerves.
"That score is heavily disputed," Jennie said, her voice dropping an octave into pure, high-strung competitive fury. "Your charity dodgeball investigation only generated more points because you illegally allowed the varsity squad to use weighted balls."
"They weren't weighted, they were just extra inflated for maximum entertainment," Roseanne countered, leaning across the divider, her dark eyes flashing with mischievous heat. "Face it, Kim. You're terrified that an impulsive, rules-defying slacker like me is going to win Professor Jess Salson's personal recommendation letter instead of the perfectionist teacher's pet."
Jennie gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "I am not a teacher's pet. Professor Salson is a visionary social worker and legal scholar. Seeking her academic mentorship is a strategic career move, not pet behavior."
"You literally bought her a customized leather folder for her case files last Tuesday," Roseanne pointed out with a smirk.
"It was high-grade synthetic leather with reinforced binding," Jennie hissed, standing up. "And it was a gesture of professional appreciation."
