Chapter 3: The Gifted Past
**Alice**

"ALICE I'M GOING OUT TO THE FOREST, WANT TO COME WITH?" Rae yelled from the front of the house. I sat on the couch watching re-runs of Pretty Little Lairs while eating chips. I thought about going out for a second before turning off the t.v and placing the chips next to me.

"Yeah, give me a second to get dressed!" I yelled back. I walked into my bedroom and over to my dresser, lucky me it opened without a problem. I pulled out my Nike running shorts and white and black sports bra, and a white tank top. I put it all on, putting my hair into a braid and putting on my running shoes.

I grabbed my phone and wireless bluetooth headphones and walked over to the front door. I connected my headphones and placed it around my neck before putting the bud in. We left the house locking it up before jogging down the street. This is what we did at night but I could tell Rae needed something to get her mind off her crush Milo.

We jogged a few miles, before we came to the beach. We stood there for a few seconds gathering air, and jogging to the forest on the outskirts of the town. They had a pond there that I could use for my water, while Rae worked on her fire.

I think I should explain our gifts better. Waterbenders can take water from the air, or a source near by them. Depending on how much you practice with waterbending, you can do amazing things. Since a person's body is 60% water, Waterbenders can change themselves into a full water being, where the only pain a person can bring to you is a firebender. We can also take water from others bodys and kill them or knock them out that way, but that takes a lot of work and talent.

Firebenders are different. A firebenders gift is weird. They don't have to use sources around them but if there is fire around them, they should use that. A firebender naturally has fire in them but they can still control it better if they have a source. Like me, Rae has practiced with it. She's a better firebender than I am water. Like a waterbender they can change their body to fire since it's already in them.

Then there's earth. Earthbenders can do many things. A starter or beginner Earthbender can only grow small flowers and move small rocks. But the more they practice the bigger the rocks they can move and the more stuff they can grow. Earthbenders can't change their body to rock, sadly. but they can become stronger than any other type of bender besides a telepath.

Telepaths. They are the strongest gifted, but it also depends on practice with it, or it they are half and half - meaning half telepath and half of something else - or a full telepath. Some telepaths can only get inside a person's mind and read their thoughts. Some can control others mind, some can create storms and some can do all. Telepaths are rare and if you find one, don't piss him or her off. In the gifted society they are feared.

The reason telepaths are rare is because a long time ago in the gifted society elders had feared telepaths would take over the world. So the elders started to kill off the telepaths. The telepaths being the nice people they are didn't fight back, yes some did but they had children who were going to be killed as well, so you would understand why they would fight back. Ten years after the rule was set, the remaining telepaths teamed up together with anyone against the rule and fought to have their rights back. Two years later they won but only about 100 to 150 telepaths were still alive, and most were elders. There's many more gifted types though. Shifters, Healers, Lightbenders, Windbenders, Viewers, and Shockers.

Shifters can change into any animal or human, depending on the level of their gift. I have known people on levels that they can barely change themselves into a monkey, which is the easiest thing for them to do since monkeys are so much like people, and I have known people so good that they can change their entire body to look like someone else after barely a glimpse at a person.
