Hissing Blisters

"We will fly you in to this area." an officer speaks pointing to a map."Then you're on you're own from there. Each one of you has a map in your backpacks. This mission has little risk but you will all be provided firearms and ammunition once on the aircraft." He explains to the platoon. A few people nod and mumble. "Okay let's head out!" The officer ordered and we all walked out of the training room following the officer. We used the stairs because all of us couldn't fit in the elevator.

Jake walked with me and our hands grazed as we walked to the roof top. We finally got to the entrance, on the other side of the building from my special spot. There was an jet placed on a small heli-pad in the center. The turbines were spinning very quietly as we walked up to it. I adjusted my backpack and boarded the jet, Jake close behind me. The jet was small and cold. There was a row of metal seats on each side of the plane and most of them were now occupied by large men. I went to the end and plopped down at the last seat, Jake sitting across from me. I buckled my safety harness and took a deep breath. I have never flown before and I was nervous. I wanted comfort from Jake but his eyes were closed, he was sleeping or attempting to ignore me. I untied my shoe and picked it up from the ground. I aimed and threw it at Jake's face. He woke up, startled and picks up the shoe that fell to the ground. Then he looked up at me with one shoe.

"Did you just... throw your shoe at me?" He accuses. I nod and he twists his head in confusion.

"Why in the hell did you that?" He asks. I look around to make sure no one is watching. Then whisper to him, my hand guarding my mouth.

"I've never flown before." I admit.

"So you felt that hitting me with a steel toed boot would help you calm down?" He asks sarcastically.

"No, I just wanted to talk to someone."

"How about that guy?" He asks, pointing to the drooling man next to me who happened to be fast asleep. I turn to Jake and shake my head. He rolls his eyes and throws my shoe onto my lap. He lets his head fall to his shoulder and closes his eyes. I sigh, trying to find a different form of entertainment. The aircraft shook a little and I looked out the window. We were in the air and below us was my home. I closed my eyes and fell asleep instantly. Turns out that sleeping on a roof isn't the best way to get some shut eye.

I jolted awake from the sound of a whistle. I sit up straight and see that a man is standing in the middle of aircraft with a whistle in his mouth.

"Can I have everyone's attention?" He calls.

"I think you achieved that with the whistle." I mutter and look to the man next to me for support. He was still sleeping so I tapped his shoulder and he jumped as tall as he could, his safety harness holding him back. I chuckled and the officer looked at me rudely.

"The leader of this mission is Alex Ringman. She has never ran a platoon before so cut her some slack." The officer made a gesture to someone behind him and the man started to hand out weapons. "You have all fired a gun before. Don't be stupid and blow your cover." He ordered, staring at me. I gave him a glare and he looked away. "Her second in command will be David Greenman. He will help out Alex." I look for David and find him smiling at me at the beginning of the aircraft. The man passing out the firearms pushed one against my chest and gave me a dirty look. I smiled at him sweetly to piss him off.

The plane was descending to the ground and so was my confidence level. I took some deep breaths and closed my eyes, thinking about my father. The plane landed to the ground and the harnesses unlocked by themselves. I stood up and walked out with the rest of the group. The plan left us alone with me in charge. Everyone looks at me expectantly with the jet no longer with us.
